Okay, so some traders are messing around with gold and Bitcoin a little more than normal, but otherwise: shrugsville. One pseudo-hilarious reason for the steel nerves? The government shutdown may have entered its second week. But for investors, it's been business as usual. Much of the uncertainty that's loomed over federal workers, food-program beneficiaries, and small businesses has so far seemingly failed to reach the markets, which have continued to enjoy record highs. And investors seem largely unfazed by the standoff in Washington, confident that this latest shutdown will—like previous ones—reach a resolution without a long-term effect on the overall economy.
"Not a whole lot has really changed for businesses," one analyst tells Vanity Fair, with investors turning to gold and Bitcoin to make money in the melee. |

Anjelica Huston is the scion of a famed Hollywood family and has been a top model and an Oscar-winning actor in films like Prizzi's Honor, The Grifters, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Dead, The Addams Family, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and The Witches. In Huston's two autobiographies—2013's A Story Lately Told: Coming of Age in Ireland, London, and New York and 2014's Watch Me: A Memoir—she also reveals herself to be an excellent writer whose keen eye for aesthetics and detail would have made her a great fashion editor, travel writer, or gossip columnist as well: "For a sophisticated girl," she notes, "I could be tragically gullible." |
