Trump addresses Congress

Seventy-eight percent of people who watched President Donald Trump’s speech had a positive reaction, according to a CNN/ORC poll of viewers; 57% of viewers had a very position reaction.

Nearly 7-in-10 who watched -- a group that was about eight points more Republican than the population as a whole -- said the President's proposed policies would move the country in the right direction.

The President showed his aspirational side in the speech and touched on a broad range of topics, including infrastructure, foreign policy and immigration.

His tone was optimistic, different from his darker and foreboding inauguration speech.

Breaking News: Trump addresses Congress

President Donald Trump in his first address to Congress condemned recent threats against Jewish community centers, vandalism at Jewish cemeteries and the shooting of two Indian men in Kansas.

"While we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its very ugly forms," he said.

Trump is aiming to perform a sharp tonal shift in his address to a joint session of Congress: "What we are witnessing today is the renewal of the American spirit."

Striking themes familiar from his campaign, Trump vowed to restore "integrity and the rule of law to our borders."

"We will soon begin the construction of a great, great wall along our southern border," Trump said, drawing raucous Republican cheers even as he didn't mention his earlier promise that Mexico would pay for the wall's construction.

He also said that "real and positive immigration reform is possible."

Trump overruled national security adviser H.R. McMaster, according to a senior administration official, to warn of "radical Islamic terrorism."

Breaking News: Trump addresses Congress

President Donald Trump is seeking to pull off a dramatic recasting of his political fortunes in his first address to Congress, after throwing a curveball at his Republican allies earlier in the day by suggesting a dramatic shift of his stance on immigration policy.

Follow his speech now on CNN’s live blog and watch it on any screen where you find CNN.

Trump is expected to perform a sharp tonal shift Tuesday in his address to a joint session of Congress. He is seeking to strike notes of inspiration and a common national purpose, according to excerpts released by the White House, which contrasts with his darker addresses at the inauguration and last summer's Republican National Convention.

"We just need the courage to share the dreams that fill our hearts," he is expected to say, according to excerpts. "The bravery to express the hopes that stir our souls. And the confidence to turn those hopes and dreams to action."

Breaking News

President Donald Trump wants to pass an immigration reform bill that could grant legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants living in the US.

“The time is right for an immigration bill as long as there is compromise on both sides," Trump told reporters Tuesday at the White House.

The President is eager to pass a compromise immigration bill in his first term that would stop short of granting a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants, but would allow undocumented immigrants who aren't serious or violent criminals to live, work and pay taxes in the US without fear of deportation, a senior administration official said.

Trump was considering adding the topic to his address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night. Follow his speech on CNN’s live blog and watch it at 9 p.m. ET on any screen where you find CNN.

A path to citizenship for those in the country illegally would not be part of Trump's vision for this deal, with the possible exception of "Dreamers" -- those brought into the US illegally as children.

News of the President's support for a comprehensive reform of the US immigration system came against a backdrop of increasingly aggressive actions by immigration authorities across the US.

Breaking News

A White House spokeswoman has condemned the shooting of two Indian men in Kansas over the weekend, telling reporters the incident appears to be "an act of racially motivated hatred."

"I want to reiterate the President condemns these or any other racially or religiously motivated attacks in the strongest terms. They have no place in our country," said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders.

The comments are the most direct the White House has been on the shooting, which killed Srinivas Kuchibhotla, a 32-year old employee at GPS company Garmin, and left Alok Madasani, 32, and Ian Grillot, 24, in the hospital.

A man who was shot while attempting to intervene in the attack has called on President Donald Trump to address the shooting in his speech to Congress tonight.

"I would like to hear him address it because it is a very sensitive subject right now," Ian Grillot, 24, told CNN. "I think it should be addressed because there's a lot of people in mourning," he continued. "It's just a very sad subject."

Sanders said she "wouldn't be surprised if that was mentioned in the speech tonight."

Watch the President's address to Congress tonight on CNN. Live coverage begins at 8 p.m.

Fly me to the moon

Tuesday, February 28, 2017
Laissez les bons temps rouler!  (That is, if you - like newsletter editor Michelle Krupa - are celebrating Mardi Gras today. For the rest of us, Happy plain ol' Tuesday.) Here's what you need to know to Get Up to Speed and Out the Door.

By Saeed Ahmed.

1. Moon tourism

Two thrill seekers are paying SpaceX a pretty sizable chunk of change to make a weeklong trip around the moon next year. CEO Elon Musk wouldn't say how much the space cowboys coughed up. But for the sake of comparison, the Russian government charged upward of $20 million for a trip to the International Space Station. If this thing's a go, it'll be the first time humans will travel past low Earth orbit since the last Apollo mission in 1972. Low-earth orbit is essentially the first rung on the ladder to being in space. It's also where some satellites that circle the Earth reside.

2. Politics

Once again, there's a lot of ground to cover.

Budget Immigration
  • Trump wants to hire an additional 5,000 Customs and Border Protection agents -- a tall task since the agency can't even fill its ranks at current levels because the requirements are so stringent.  Now comes word that Homeland Security is exploring ways to make it easier to hire agents.
Healthcare
"We need an independent media to hold people like me to account. Power can be very addictive, and it can be corrosive."
George W. Bush, on the media's role as a check on presidential power

3. Anti-Semitic incidents

Bomb threats were called into Jewish community centers and day schools in at least 12 states yesterday. This is the fifth wave of bomb threats targeting Jewish community centers across the US and Canada since the year began. Add to that, the vandalism at Jewish cemeteries and several incidents in Miami where swastikas were etched into cars over the weekend, and what you get is a disturbing pattern of anti-Semitism.

4. California plane crash

This morning, officials will try to determine why a small plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in Riverside, California. Three of the five people on board were killed; two others injured. They were in Southern California for a cheerleading competition at Disneyland, and were heading back to San Jose. No one was inside the homes the plane hit, but officials will do a secondary check just to be sure.

5. North Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was so furious that five senior-level officials had lied to him that he apparently had them executed by anti-aircraft guns. The officials worked for the State Security Ministry whose job is to run prison camps and spy on citizens. Kim also ordered his father's statue removed from the ministry grounds saying "they don't deserve the statue." Kim has long used executions as way to tighten his hold on power. In his five years, more than 300 people have reportedly been killed.
