Four years ago, San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick decided to kneel during the national anthem as it played before NFL games. His activism effectively ended his career as a professional quarterback—but it has had an enormous ripple effect on the culture at large, one that is only underlined by the announcement Monday that Kaepernick has signed an overall deal with Disney. As Yohana Desta details, the athlete will kick off his new media-mogul phase with an ESPN docuseries about his life. News of this deal also comes on the heels of another Kaepernick–focused project: Colin in Black & White, a Netflix series Kaepernick created and will produce alongside Ava DuVernay.
Elsewhere in HWD, Jordan Hoffman bids arrivederci to Ennio Morricone, the iconic film composer; Kanye West plots an actual presidential campaign, apparently; Michael Bay's pandemic-themed thriller is foiled by the actual pandemic; and Leslie David Baker, a.k.a. Stanley from The Office, hopes you miss him enough to help him kickstart an unofficial follow-up to NBC's Gen Z-beloved series.
