White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany denied this morning that Anthony Fauci is sidelined amid signs of a rift between President Trump and the nation’s leading infectious disease expert. https://bit.ly/3gYNUmv

McEnany said on “Fox & Friends”: “The point of the task force is to be a whole of government look at what is best for this country. Dr. Fauci is one member of a team, but rest assured, his viewpoint is represented and the information gets to the president through the task force.”

What sparked this — Fauci, maybe get a mirror for your back…:

Via The Washington Post’s Yasmeen Abutaleb, Josh Dawsey and Laurie McGinley, the White House is attempting to discredit Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, as President Trump downplays the coronavirus pandemic. https://wapo.st/3fqc896

“A White House official released a statement saying that ‘several White House officials are concerned about the number of times Dr. Fauci has been wrong on things’ and included a lengthy list of the scientist’s comments from early in the outbreak.”

MARK MEADOWS HAS A TOUGH GIG:

Via Politico’s Nancy Cook, “Mark Meadows finds it’s not so easy being chief: He took the job thinking his people skills and friendship with the president would smooth the way. Now, a harsher reality is seeping in.” The full storyhttps://politi.co/3fsNowM

Report: Facebook leads industry on removal of hate speech

At 35,000 people, our safety & security teams work to keep our platforms safe 24/7. A recent EU report found we remove more reported hate speech than other major platforms. But any hate speech is too much — there’s more work to do.

NEWS THIS MORNING

Like Arya for a brief time, a team has no name:

The Washington Redskins will change its name and logo, the team announced this morning. https://es.pn/3040LNI

Sooo, what’s the new name….?: We don’t know yet. “Sports Business Daily reported that announcement of the new name is delayed because trademark issues are pending.”

What we know about the new branding: “[A] source told ESPN that the plan, as of now, is to retain the franchise's use of burgundy and gold colors. Coach Ron Rivera had said the team wanted to include the military in its new name, as well.”

From the team: "Dan Snyder and Coach (Ron) Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition-rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years."

THE TALK OF TWITTER — NEW NAME IDEAS:

#NewRedSkinsName has been popular on Twitter. Some are jokes, some are legitimate ideas. Here are a few of the real ideashttps://bit.ly/2OkiCKH

But also check out the hashtag — there are some entertaining suggestions. For example: “The Washington Parking Tickets” or “The Washington Dynamic Toll Lanes.”  https://bit.ly/2WhvxBD

LATEST WITH THE CORONAVIRUS

The ‘glass half full’ news from the surgeon general:

Surgeon General Jerome Adams said the U.S. can reverse the coronavirus surge “in just two or three weeks if everyone does their part.” https://bit.ly/2C4cZxC

From the surgeon general: “Just as we've seen cases skyrocket, we can turn this thing around in two to three weeks if we can get a critical mass of people wearing face coverings, practicing at least six feet of social distancing, doing the things that we know are effective. And it’s important for the American people to understand when we’re talking about the fall, we have the ability to turn this around very quickly if people will do the right thing.”

Adam’s reasoning: “More studies coming out showing the effectiveness of face coverings.”

Interesting tidbit — CBS’s Margaret Brennan asked Adams whether he regretted telling Americans to stop buying masks in March: “I was saying that then because everything we knew about coronaviruses before that point told us that people were not likely to spread when asymptomatic … We follow the science, and when we learn more, our recommendations change. But it's hard when people are continuing to talk about things from three, four months ago.”

Crazy context to that figure: “If it were a country, Florida would be fourth in the world for most new daily cases (after the US overall, Brazil, and India).” (Via political scientist Ian Bremmerhttps://bit.ly/3frDknJ

NYC HIT A GREAT MILESTONE OVER THE WEEKEND:

New York City reported its first day without a coronavirus death for the first time since March 10. https://bloom.bg/2ZmqEZW

THE NUMBERS:

Coronavirus cases in the U.S.: 3,308,312

U.S. death toll: 135,219
