White House looks to rein in gas prices ahead of busy travel season

The White House is pulling out various stops in an effort to get gas prices under control at the start of what is expected to be a busy holiday travel season.

The administration is tapping into the strategic petroleum reserve and President Biden has called on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether oil companies are responsible for increased prices.

Cities prep security plans for large holiday crowds

Authorities across the country are stressing security precautions they have taken as large crowds gather for holiday events, urging the public to remain vigilant in reporting anything suspicious.

The deadly crash over the weekend in Waukesha, Wis., where a driver plowed into a holiday parade, killing six people and injuring dozens of others, has raised security fears about other holiday events in the coming weeks, when people are expected to venture out after largely staying home last year.

All 3 men in Arbery killing found guilty of murder

A Georgia jury on Wednesday found three white men charged in the death of Ahmaud Arbery guilty of multiple counts of murder. The jury found Travis McMichael, 35, who fatally shot Arbery on Feb. 23, 2020, in a Brunswick, Ga., neighborhood, guilty of all nine counts brought against him, including malice murder.

Biden approval at 42 percent in NPR/Marist poll

President Biden’s approval rating hit a new low in an NPR/Marist poll released Wednesday. Just 42 percent of the survey's participants approve of the job that Biden is doing in office, the lowest rating Biden has received in this particular poll since he was inaugurated in January.

Jobless claims plunge to 199K, lowest level since 1969

New weekly claims for jobless aid plunged to the lowest level in more than 50 years last week, according to data released Wednesday by the Labor Department.

In the week ending Nov. 20, there were 199,000 initial applications for unemployment insurance, according to the seasonally adjusted figures, a decline of 71,000 from the previous week.

Most expensive Thanksgiving ever? It's not all inflation

OPINION | By now, we’ve all seen the headlines predicting that this week’s Thanksgiving will be the most expensive on record. While it is technically true, food inflation also makes this statement true most years. Adjusting for inflation, the price of Thanksgiving staples has declined substantially over the past few decades. This decline in the “real” price can likely be attributed to gains from trade and improvements in agricultural production technology. That said, just because inflation occurs regularly does not mean that this Thanksgiving’s price increases are trivial.

OPINION | China’s massive investment in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) may show China is preparing to fundamentally change the status quo and preparing for possible war with the United States over Taiwan. To deter China, the United States must rapidly build up its forces in the Pacific, continue to strengthen military alliances in the region to ensure access to bases in time of conflict, and accelerate deliveries of purchased military equipment to Taiwan.
