Members of the House and Senate are both sounding alarm bells about the potential for a budget standoff with the new GOP-controlled House and the power wielded by far-right Republicans who kept the House Speaker election in limbo last week. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (Conn.), the senior Democrat on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, says government shutdowns are all but inevitable if the newly empowered Republicans insist on dropping federal funding back to 2022 levels, as some of them have demanded.
"You cannot pass appropriations bills without them being both bipartisan and bicameral. The president will not sign," she said during a press briefing Tuesday. "So I think this notion that you can deal with 2022 levels — that appears to have been a part of this secret deal — you then may be looking at guaranteeing a shutdown."
Meanwhile, Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Sen. Susan Collins (Maine), the top Republican on the panel, have pledged "to find common ground" in face of a potential standoff with the House over spending.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) agreed to a deal to cut back on spending in an arrangement to secure the House gavel after 15 rounds of voting last week.
Murray and Collins have both expressed support for taking up the annual appropriations bills in a more timely manner in the Senate. Read more on their comments here. |
