Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special counsel to investigate the discovery of classified documents that were potentially mishandled following President Biden's tenure as vice president. Robert Hur, a former Trump-appointed US attorney in Maryland who resigned in 2021, is now looking into batches of classified documents that have been found at Biden's former Washington, D.C., office and his private property in Delaware. "The extraordinary circumstances here require the appointment of a special counsel for this matter," Garland said in announcing his decision. "This appointment underscores for the public the department's commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters." Hur's been tasked with reviewing "the possible unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents," Garland said. The situation has been compared to former President Trump's possession of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The White House has repeatedly pushed back on those comparisons, claiming Biden's team immediately reached out to the National Archives when it discovered top secret documents were being stored outside of the federal government's confines. "They did the right thing, and they did it voluntarily," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Thursday. Read more here.
