Biden unveils gun policy executive order |
President Biden is pitching a new executive order on gun policy during a visit to Monterey Park, Calif., where a mass shooting occurred on Jan. 21. The order's aims include increasing compliance with existing background check regulations and encouraging more effective use of "red flag" laws. From The Hill's Alex Gangitano: "In the wake of the shooting and others so far this year, Biden has called for Congress to move on more gun control legislation, but House Republicans have shown no appetite to do so." The order directs Attorney General Merrick Garland to make sure certain gun sellers know they're required to conduct background checks by clarifying the definition of "who is engaged in the business of dealing in firearms." The order also directs several departments to partner with law enforcement, health care providers, educators and community leaders to make effective use of "red flag" laws, which enable a judge to take a firearm from someone if they suspect the person may harm themselves or someone else. See the full order here. Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law last year. Its provisions included enhanced background checks for those between 18 and 21, allocating funds to states to administer red flag laws and steps to address the "boyfriend loophole." Russian jet brings down US drone
A Russian fighter jet brought down a U.S. Air Force drone early Tuesday. According to U.S. European Command, the drone was flying over international waters. "It is not uncommon for there to be intercepts by Russian aircraft of U.S. aircraft over the Black Sea," said White House national security spokesperson John Kirby. "But this one obviously is noteworthy because of how unsafe and unprofessional it was … in causing the downing of one of our aircraft." State Department spokesperson Ned Price said the department was summoning Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to the U.S., to the department. The Hill's Brett Samuels has more on the incident here. |

EPA seeks nationwide limit on 'forever chemicals' in drinking water
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing a requirement for drinking water systems to limit the amount of two types of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to 4 parts per trillion, along with other regulations on mixtures of four types of PFAS. These would be the "first-ever nationwide drinking limits for toxic substances known as 'forever chemicals' that have become pervasive in U.S waterways," The Hill's Rachel Frazin wrote. EPA administrator Michael Regan said, "We anticipate that when fully implemented, this rule will prevent thousands of deaths and reduce tens of thousands of serious PFAS-related illnesses." Rubio, DeSantis disagree on nature of Ukraine conflict
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said in a questionnaire on Ukraine from Fox News's Tucker Carlson that "becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia" was not one of the United States' "vital national interests." Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, contested DeSantis's characterization of the conflict when asked about it on the "Hugh Hewitt Show." Rubio said "it's not a territorial dispute ... any more than it would be a territorial dispute if the United States decided that it wanted to invade Canada or take over the Bahamas." He said "it's really more of a desire to dominate their neighbor, have them as part of their sphere of influence, not so much of it about the land." See how several current and potential 2024 candidates responded to Carlson's Ukraine questionnaire here. |
