Richard Gates has emerged as a key figure in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russia's interference in the election. 

Observers for weeks had been expecting that Gates, a one-time Trump campaign aide, might strike an agreement with special counsel Robert Mueller to avoid going to trial before Mueller on Thursday unveiled a slate of new criminal charges against him and Paul Manafort, his longtime business partner.
