President Trump's former homeland security adviser, Tom Bossert, said on Sunday that the past week was filled with "terrible optics" for the White House — something that, he said, could have been avoided.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said Sunday that President Trump is “still 100 percent” supportive of a more moderate Republican immigration bill in the House, despite the president urging lawmakers to abandon efforts to pass the legislation.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Sunday said President Trump must work with Democrats on immigration and make clear that the United States “is not a nation which tears children from their parents.”
“Congress has to fix this. And what’s bothersome is the president’s rhetoric about the Democrats and their unwillingness to have any type of border security or control."
"The president uses words like 'they're breeders,' 'in sanctuary cities they're protecting breeders.' He said yesterday 'they come to infest,' " Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) said.
“A subcommittee looked ... into the lack of coordination between [the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)], who with unaccompanied children has to turn those unaccompanied children over to [the Department of Health and Human Resources (HHS)] within 72 hours. And they literally lost track of, I think it was about 1,500 kids,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said.
Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) said Sunday he doesn’t believe it makes sense to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), but he supports examining how the agency is going about its work.
“You can’t, as a Republican these days, stand in opposition to some of the president’s policies, or not condone his behavior and expect to win a Republican primary,” Flake said.
“The restaurant owner should have served her,” Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) said. “But this tone is horrible. But again, I think President Trump has created this.”
