Biden says he has declared climate emergency 'in practice' |
The president told The Weather Channel he has "practically" declared a climate emergency in the United States, a step environmentalists have long pressured him to take. |
In the interview, which aired Wednesday morning, Biden said a declaration was already in place "in practice" and pointed to the administration's climate actions like land conservation and rejoining the Paris Climate Accord. Biden appeared poised to declare a climate emergency last year as talks over climate legislation stalled out. However, he did not do so, and congressional Democrats were able to break the logjam and pass the Inflation Reduction Act, the largest climate legislation in U.S. history. A national emergency, in addition to an acknowledgment of the climate crisis, would make additional authorities available to Biden, a distinction that proponents of a declaration were quick to note.
"Biden has, in fact, failed to declare a climate emergency under the National Emergencies Act, failed to harness his executive powers, and failed to take lifesaving action to end fossil fuels," Kassie Siegel, director of the Center for Biological Diversity's Climate Law Institute, said in a statement.
