For House Republicans, the first year of their new majority was a lesson in humility, plagued by infighting, historic expulsions and dashed exceptions. Don't just count the nearly four weeks without an elected Speaker and the public bickering. The internal dysfunction is also reflected in the key metrics. Just 31 pieces of legislation became law in 2023, the lowest number in the modern era, going back more than 50 years. |

Nikki Haley is on the rise, looking for an upset that could derail former President Trump's path to the Republican presidential nomination. It's becoming increasingly clear that the New Hampshire primary is her best— and perhaps only — chance. Haley's advance in the Granite State has been striking. |

A poll released this week found Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley trails former President Trump by 4 points in New Hampshire, prompting online outrage from the former president. According to a December survey by American Research Group Inc. asking voters who their preference was in the Republican presidential primary, Trump earned 33 percent support. |

The Supreme Court declined to take up whether President Trump can be prosecuted for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, punting for now the question on the limits of presidential immunity as the former president seeks to toss the case. The refusal, which had no noted dissents, comes as an appeals court weighs a motion from Trump to dismiss the case; he argues he has absolute presidential immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts. |

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) warned efforts to prevent former President Trump from getting on the ballot in his state could be a "political distraction" Thursday. "There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy," Newsom said Friday in a statement, which was first reported by Politico. "But, in California, we defeat candidates at the polls." |

Former President Trump said he would allow for a peaceful transfer of power at the end of his second term if he is reelected. In a Friday interview with Trump, conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt asked the former president if he would "peacefully surrender" power at the end of another term if he is reelected. |

Former President Trump claimed Friday that Vice President Harris would do a better job leading the White House than President Biden. Pressed by conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on whether a vote for Biden would be equal to one for Harris, Trump said "I think so." Though, he added, he's not sure Biden would even get "to the starting gate." |

The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Friday struck down Republican-drawn legislative maps and ordered new district boundary lines in the battleground state be drawn before the 2024 election. The 4-3 decision in favor of Democrats could have resounding implications for the rapidly nearing presidential race, given four of the state's six past presidential elections have been decided by fewer than 23,000 votes. |

OPINION | Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is Jewish, but in July he approved a law moving Christmas in Ukraine from January 7, the date in the Eastern Orthodox calendar, to the Western celebration day of December 25. See that, Moscow? All the indications are, however, that while Christmas may come sooner in Ukraine this year, it is going to be a bleak one. |
OPINION | The end of each year is usually a time for reflection about how the economy and markets fared, as well as for assessing future prospects. Normally, the assessments are a blend of both positive and negative considerations. This year, however, was different: The U.S. economy performed better than expected by virtually every yardstick. |
