The Supreme Court will return to the bench Monday to start its new term, where battles over transgender rights, guns and adult website use are already brewing.
So far, the court has agreed to review 43 appeals, with decisions expected by summer. Although court watchers have called the upcoming term sleepier than others in recent memory, the justices are still poised to issue key rulings, and additional cases are expected to be added to their docket this fall. |

Oil prices increased this week after President Biden suggested Israel may target Iran's oil infrastructure in retaliation for a missile attack, raising the prospect of pain at the pump for U.S. consumers in the waning days of the presidential campaign.
On Thursday, responding to a question about whether the U.S. would back Israel if it targets Iranian oil facilities, the president responded "we're discussing that" but added that "there's nothing going to happen today." In the hours after the remarks, West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. oil benchmark, spiked 5.5 percent. |

A series of turbulent events have left Democrats feeling hopeful but anxious a month out from November's elections, with races for the House and White House too close to call.
The volatile political environment — combined with razor-tight races in battleground states and districts around the country — have put many Democrats on edge in the final stretch to Election Day. |

Courtney McClain was 18 when she met then-Sen. Kamala Harris in 2019 at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.
When McClain arrived at the club, Harris, then a candidate in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, offered her some advice.

Former President Trump returned to the site of a July assassination attempt on Saturday, rallying with thousands of supporters in Butler, Pa., and honoring a supporter who was killed that day. Trump had said he felt an "obligation" to return to Butler, and he was joined Saturday by several high-profile guests and allies, including Elon Musk. |

Veteran Democratic political strategist James Carville said the 2024 White House election between former President Trump and Vice President Harris is a "long way from decided." CNN's host Michael Smerconish asked Carville, the architect of Bill Clinton's winning 1992 presidential campaign, why Harris, the Democratic nominee, is not ahead in the contest if the economy, including unemployment and stock market numbers, were "strong." |

Vice President Harris and former President Trump have one month to convince voters to side with them in what appears likely to be one of the tightest presidential races in American history. Harris enters the homestretch as the slight favorite, with The Hill/Decision Desk HQ model giving her a 54 percent chance of winning the presidency. Republicans are bigger favorites to win the Senate, at 71 percent. The House battle is as close as the race for the White House, with Republicans having a 56 percent chance, according to the model, of holding on to their majority.

Tech mogul Elon Musk, appearing alongside former President Trump at his rally in Butler, Pa., railed against Democrats, claiming the party wanted to take away basic rights from citizens. Democrats want to "take away your freedom of speech, they want to take away your right to bear arms, they want to take away your right to vote, effectively," Musk, the owner of X and Tesla, said at the rally, held at the same site where an assassin tried to kill Trump on July 13. |

Vice President Harris's running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), slammed Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) at a campaign event near the senator's hometown on Saturday, saying that former President Trump's running mate does not reflect the "integrity" of the people in the state. "He is not a reflection on the integrity of the people of Ohio," Walz said at an event on behalf of the Harris Victory Fund, according to NewsNation's Jackie Koppell. Walz condemned the senator for saying he would not have certified the 2020 presidential election and for refusing to answer whether Trump lost that race during their vice presidential debate last week. |

OPINION | As the anniversary of the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks on Israel approaches, the prospects for a lasting peace are more elusive than ever. Israel has reduced much of Gaza to ruins, killed an estimated 40,000 people, and displaced around 1.9 million others. Displaced persons live in appalling conditions with shortages of food, water and medicine. |
OPINION | It's often said that imitation is the highest form of flattery. Ancient Rome copied the Classical Greeks. Julius Caesar copied Alexander the Great. The French Revolution's Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen copied America's Declaration of Independence. In American politics today, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Republicans and Democrats are so ideologically far apart that they wouldn't want to copy anything from the opposing party whatsoever. The two parties seem incapable of even acknowledging that the other side might have a decent idea or two. |
