A shooting at the Dallas ICE facility: |
A shooter opened fire at the Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office this morning, killing one victim and wounding two others. The suspect is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem said this morning. What we know: • The head of the Dallas FBI field office that rounds were found near the shooter with "anti-ICE" messages. 📸 • No law enforcement staff were injured, according to officials. • WFAA reports that ICE detainees were targeted in the shooting. Noem said officials are still looking for the motive: "While we don't know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them," Noem wrote. "It must stop." And Vice President Vance posted that the "obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop." 💬 Follow today's live blog for updates 💻 Watch the latest update from officials |
The monologue heard 'round the world: |
Jimmy Kimmel's return to late-night television on Tuesday has been the talk of the political world today. While we haven't seen the official network viewership ratings yet, more than 11.4 million people have watched his monologue in just 12 hours on YouTube alone. CNN's Harry Enten notes Kimmel's show has a median YouTube viewership of roughly 240,000. It's heading toward Kimmel's record as his most-watched monologue of all time. 💻 Watch Kimmel's opening monologue President Trump is furious about Kimmel's return to the airwaves. The president posted a lengthy message on Truth Social, bashing "ABC Fake News" and calling for Kimmel to "rot in his bad ratings." Trump also claimed ABC told the White House Kimmel's show was canceled (the network only announced a suspension last week) while speculating that "something happened between then and now." 🔎 Read Trump's full post What does Charlie Kirk's group think of Kimmel's apology?: A spokesperson for Turning Point USA, the group Kirk co-founded in 2012, says Kimmel's apology was "not good enough." |
➤ OK, LET'S TALK ABOUT THE MONOLOGUE: |
Kimmel began with an emotional return, telling viewers it was "never his intention to make light of the murder of a young man." His monologue was somber and thankful for all the support he received in the days since his suspension. He even thanked conservative figures, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for defending him. "People who I never would have imagined, like Ben Shapiro, Clay Travis, Candace Owens, [Sens.] Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), even my old pal Ted Cruz, who believe it or not said something very beautiful on my behalf," Kimmel said. But Kimmel was unapologetic when it came to the Trump administration. He railed against the president, arguing it's "anti-American" for a "government threat to silence a comedian the president doesn't like." Read Kimmel's full comments on the Kirk comment: "[It] was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don't — I don't think there's anything funny about it," Kimmel said. "I posted a message on Instagram on the day he was killed sending love to his family and asking for compassion, and I meant it. And I still do." "Nor was it my intention to blame any specific group for the actions — it was a deeply disturbed individual," Kimmel added. His joke at situational awareness: Kimmel began his show by saying, "I'm not sure who had a weirder 48 hours, me or the CEO of Tylenol." |
Trump signals major break from Russia: |
President Trump turned heads on Tuesday when he issued a blistering criticism of Russia, arguing Russia "has been fighting aimlessly" since it first attacked Ukraine in 2022, adding that Russia looks like a "paper tiger." This is a major shift away from Trump's favorable statements toward Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past nine months. It wasn't just one social media post. Trump also bashed Russia in his U.N. speech on Tuesday. "Everyone thought Russia would win this war in three days, but it didn't work out that way. It was supposed to be just a quick little skirmish. It's not making Russia look good." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday he was a "little bit" surprised by Trump's comments. The Kremlin pushes back on Trump's comments: Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in an interview that Russia is not a "paper tiger." "After all, Russia is more often compared to a bear. There are no 'paper bears,' and Russia is a real bear," Peskov said. |
