Mark Green, President Trump's choice for Army secretary, announced in a statement Friday that he is withdrawing his name from consideration.

On Tuesday, CNN reported that Green’s nomination was in serious jeopardy.

Green’s nomination ran into trouble after a backlash over past controversial statements on LGBT issues, Islam and evolution.

Green, a retired Army flight surgeon and West Point grad, was tapped in early April after Trump's initial nominee for the position, billionaire Vincent Viola, withdrew over issues related to divesting from his financial holdings.
