Dem, GOP campaign chiefs call for unity in aftermath of mail bombs, synagogue shooting

The congressmen leading the Democratic and Republican House campaign arms each called for unity on Sunday, and said a recent burst of violence should not be politicized in the final days before the midterm elections.

Reps. Ben Ray Lujan (D-N.M.) and Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), who chair the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), respectively, said on "Fox News Sunday" that politicians should work to unify the country in the wake of a deadly shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue and a spate of bomb threats against prominent critics of President Trump.

Pittsburgh mayor calls synagogue shooting 'darkest day' in city history

"To the victims' families, to the victims' friends, we are here for you as a community of one," Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto (D) said shortly after the names of the 11 people killed in Saturday's attack were released.

"Look, when Congresswoman Maxine Waters encourage folks, protesters, advocates in my party, to continue this practice of harassing, of confronting folks from the other party I spoke out against it," Delaware Sen. Chris Coons (D)  told CBS.

"Many people in my party did," he added. "I think it's important that people who are in leadership nationally who are well known discourage that kind of aggressive advocacy."
