We will all be impeachment experts by the end of this administration: |
© Getty Images House Democrats just formally introduced an article of impeachment of President Trump following the Capitol Hill riot that left five dead. https://bit.ly/3scktUx The charge: Inciting a mob of supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol in an effort to overturn the presidential election results The three House Democrats that introduced the article: Reps. THE LIKELY ORDER OF EVENTS: |
Today: Democrats will try to pass, by unanimous consent, a resolution for Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to sideline Trump. Trump’s allies in the House will almost certainly block this resolution, so it will not pass unanimously. Tuesday: So then Democrats will bring that same resolution to the House floor tomorrow. Wednesday: The earliest possible day that House Democrats could formally vote to impeach Trump. If the House passes impeachment articles: The articles would then head to the Senate for a trial. It’s still unclear whether the Senate would hold a trial immediately or potentially wait a few months to prioritize President-elect Biden’s agenda for his first 100 days. THE AFTERMATH OF THE RIOTS
From the perspective of two Black Capitol Police officers — this will make your blood boil: |
Via BuzzFeed’s Emmanuel Felton, two Black veteran officers of the Capitol Police described their experiences on Capitol Hill Wednesday. https://bit.ly/39nxVMU From one officer: “ ‘I got called a n----- 15 times today,’ the veteran officer shouted in the Rotunda to no one in particular. ‘Trump did this and we got all of these f------ people in our department that voted for him. How the f--- can you support him?’ ‘I cried for about 15 minutes and I just let it out.’ ” From another officer: “We were telling them to back up and get away and stop, and they’re telling us they are on our side, and they’re doing this for us, and they’re saying this as I’m getting punched in my face by one of them. ... That happened to a lot of us. We were getting pepper-sprayed in the face by those protesters — I'm not going to even call them protesters — by those domestic terrorists.” The full accounts from two Black officers protecting the Capitol: https://bit.ly/39nxVMU |

MORE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS THAT EMERGED OVER THE WEEKEND
This realization continues to set in: Politico’s Melanie Zanona tweeted, “It's becoming increasingly clear that Jan. 6 was minutes, if not seconds, away from becoming a bloodbath inside the United States Capitol. We're just lucky the rioters didn't know what they were doing — and that there were some fast-thinking cops on the scene.” https://bit.ly/3i6ElUr Remember the viral video of protesters forcing their way up the stairs in the Senate?: The Huffington Post’s Igor Bobic captured video of a single police officer attempting to hold back rioters as they walk near the Senate. First, watch that video again.: https://bit.ly/3i4Ggsw ^ Bobic took that video at 2:14 p.m. The Senate was sealed at 2:15 p.m. Had the rioter turned right, he would have reached the entrance to the Senate, which was still not sealed. Let that sink in. © Twitter ^ What the Senate floor looked like at this moment: https://bit.ly/38wyggP As a warning, this video is very hard to watch.: © Twitter Watch: https://bit.ly/3sdFMoP “One more detail about the chase up the Senate steps by a mob carrying a Confederate flag: it happened in front of portrait of Sen. On Friday night, he lost it. And, then, he lost his mind.” https://politi.co/2XuXHt0 The feeling in the White House: “The president is ‘ballistic,’ a senior administration official said after Twitter permanently took down his account, citing the possibility that it would be used in the final 12 days of Trump’s presidency to incite violence. The official said Trump was ‘scrambling to figure out what his options are.’ ” |
