Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has lost a historic ninth vote for Speaker of the House, forcing the chamber into a double digit round of voting with no end in sight. Shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, the House began its 10th debate with McCarthy as the top candidate for the Republicans but so far unable to pass the 218-vote threshold needed to secure the gavel. Without a selection of a Speaker, the chamber could be forced to continue debating through the weekend. The gridlock has left members in limbo, unable to vote on the chamber's rules or even swear in members. Members have complained about not having access to tools to address constituent needs. McCarthy and his allies have spent the past three days trying to bust up a bloc of hardline Republicans who have steadfastly opposed McCarthy's candidacy over a variety of grievances, largely linked to chamber rules and committee assignments. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has won support from all 212 Democrats since voting began Tuesday afternoon on the next House Speaker. Read more here.
