The House remains locked a historic stalemate over who will serve as Speaker — a situation the chamber hasn't seen in a century. The lack of selection as Republicans continue inter-party feuding has left the chamber in a standstill — unable to swear in members or adopt rules. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has failed to win a majority in six votes over the past two days. His 20 key GOP opponents have shown no signs of fracturing or standing down. McCarthy, who was picked to be the GOP nominee by a majority of the caucus last fall, hasn't been able to hit the 218-vote threshold required in a full House vote. He risks a severely wounded stature after the continued losses. Chatter began to pick up on Wednesday that it's time to consider a possible replacement or new plan for leadership. There are three scenarios for how the drama could end: - McCarthy drops out and Scalise becomes Speaker
- Moderate Republicans work with Democrats to elect an alternative
- McCarthy wears down his opponents and Democrats to win
Read more about those scenarios here. More coverage from The Hill on second day of House Speaker votes: |
