A handful of House Democrats say they'd step in to help Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) keep his gavel in the face of a potential conservative revolt — but it wouldn't come free. Democrats willing to consider the matter said Johnson would first have to forge an agreement with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) ensuring Democrats had a greater voice in the legislative process. In that case, they'd be willing to provide the votes to keep the Speaker in power. |

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are growing concerned about the chances of a partial government shutdown as tensions rise over spending. With less than a week until some agencies could face a lapse in funding, there is plenty of uncertainty around what kind of legislation could muster enough support to pass both chambers. |

President Biden is in search of a winning message on the 2024 campaign trail, one that is not overly reliant on attacks on former President Trump and the risks of putting him back in the White House. Biden is clearly energized and comfortable taking the fight to Trump, as evidenced by his speech last week near Valley Forge, Pa., in which he forcefully lambasted the former president for his inaction during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. |

The deadly strikes by the United States and United Kingdom on Houthi rebels in Yemen risks instigating a wider war in the Middle East involving additional proxy groups connected to Iran. The Houthis and their chief sponsor, Iran, have condemned the strikes, which they said hit 73 sites in Yemen and killed at least five people, and vowed the Western alliance will pay a price for the attacks. |

A majority of Americans in a new survey say they would support the Supreme Court either disqualifying former President Trump from presidential ballots across the country or letting states decide whether to include him on their ballots. Nearly one-third — 30 percent — of respondents in the ABC News/Ipsos survey said they think the justices should order that Trump be removed from ballots across the country, and 26 percent said they believed the matter should be left up to election officials in each state. Additionally, 39 percent of Americans surveyed said they think the Supreme Court should order Trump be kept on the ballot in all states. |

DES MOINES, Iowa — A powerful blizzard put a freeze on campaign events Friday as candidates look to make their final case to Iowans ahead of Monday's caucuses. Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley's campaign announced she would hold three telephone town halls in Webster, Plymouth, and Pottawattamie counties Friday after canceling in-person events in those areas. Meanwhile, the pro-DeSantis super PAC Never Back Down postponed events in Clear Lake and Marshalltown, where the governor was slated to speak. |

| House lawmakers left a Friday classified briefing on UFOs, referred to as unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) by the government, with mixed feelings, some frustrated with the limited information and some claiming they were given more clarity on last summer's explosive testimony on the unexplained sightings. |

The Supreme Court said Friday it would consider whether local laws prohibiting homeless people from sleeping on public property is cruel and unusual punishment barred by the Constitution. The Oregon city of Grants Pass asked the high court to review a lower court's decision to block it from enforcing its public camping ordinance, writing that the decision "cemented a conflict" with California courts that have upheld similar ordinances. |

| With COVID-19 cases on the rise once again, everyone seems to either be getting infected or know someone who is. Without the robust data tracking that was available during the public health emergency, a clear picture is harder to discern, but some trends can still be observed. Hospital admissions jumped by 20 percent in the most recent week, having been on the rise since the start of November. That trend is reflected across the country, apart from the Western U.S., with roughly 10 percent of U.S. counties now considered to have high hospital admission rates. |

OPINION | Taiwan's upcoming election stands as a litmus test of the Chinese Communist Party's political warfare strategy, specifically whether disinformation and military drills alone can bend Taipei's will toward Beijing's reunification designs. Yet, China's bid to undermine Taiwan's democracy also foreshadows its intent to influence the 2024 U.S. election — an act of subversion Washington cannot afford to ignore. |

OPINION | The idea of a four-day workweek is catching attention. Young workers in particular see it as the wave of the future, while others worry it will undermine America prosperity. Economists have pondered the viability of a four-day workweek since research by Janice Hedges in 1971. Recently, though, a magical idea has come to the fore: Let employees work one fewer day per week at the same hours per day and same pay, and they will accomplish just as much as in a standard five-day workweek. |

As they have crisscrossed the Hawkeye state, the major 2024 Republican presidential candidates have paid special attention to churchgoers and their leaders. Some white evangelical conservative voters, who are influential in Iowa's Jan. 15 caucuses, weren't yet sold on renominating former President Donald Trump, according to recent interviews conducted by The Wall Street Journal for its "Chasing the Base" podcast. |
Associated Press: In 100 days, the Israel-Hamas war has transformed the region. The fighting shows no signs of ending |
Sunday marks 100 days that Israel and Hamas have been at war. The war already is the longest and deadliest between Israel and the Palestinians since Israel's establishment in 1948, and the fighting shows no signs of ending. |
What started with a single question from a voter about the origins of the Civil War has morphed into a sprawling political clash over a monumental event in American history, making the Civil War a major component of a presidential election for the first time in recent memory and exposing fresh divisions over race, history and progress. |
