President Trump sat down with Fox News's Laura Ingraham for an interview on Monday. But unlike many of his friendly Fox News appearances, this one was fiery. The two clashed over the president's 50-year mortgage proposal, China, the MAGA base — and even his gold Oval Office decor.
The part that's getting traction: Trump defended his plan for a 50-year mortgage proposal, which has received blowback from his conservative MAGA base. "It's not even a big deal," Trump told Ingraham.
"I mean, you go from 40 to 50 years and what it means is you pay something less. From 30, some people had a 40 and now they have a 50," Trump said. "All it means is you pay less per month. You pay it over a longer period of time. It's not like a big factor. It might help a little bit."
Example of the criticism: Fox Business anchor Charles Payne played out a side-by-side comparison of a mortgage and how it would change under Trump's 50-year proposal.
Payne said on Fox New: "It depends on how much the house costs, but if you just took a 4 percent interest rate for a 30-year, it would be $2,300; for a 50-year, it would be $1,900, so you're saving almost 500 bucks a month in terms of affordability. But, by the time you finish paying this bad boy off, the 30-year, you pay $359,000 versus a 50-year, almost $700,000, right? So it's just a gargantuan difference just to make people feel better."

📺 On Trump's threat to 'dock' unpaid air traffic controllers who aren't working: Ingraham pressed Trump on whether that's a good idea given the "deficit" of air traffic controllers. Trump said no and said he wants to pay $10,000 bonuses to controllers who have been working. "Where's that money coming from?" Ingraham pushed. "I don't know. 📺 On China: "They're not the French. They're the Chinese. They spy on us. They steal our intellectual property," Ingraham said. "What, you think the French are better?" Trump shot back. 📺 What Trump thought about the East Wing of the White House: "It looked like hell," Trump said, describing the historic wing of the White House as a "poor, sad sight."
