Marine Le Pen says she has called to congratulate French presidential rival Emmanuel Macron after exit estimates projected a heavy defeat for the far-right candidate.
Initial estimates project Macron will take 65.9% of the vote, according to BFMTV-Elabe.
France’s rejection of candidate Le Pen’s anti-globalization and anti-immigration stance brought a sigh of relief from European Union leaders.
Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, tweeted his congratulations to Macron, adding that he is "happy that the French have chosen a European future."
