More than 8 million Americans have already applied for the Biden administration's student debt forgiveness program following an online soft launch late last week, officials announced Monday. "Today marks a big step, among others, that my administration is taking to make education a ticket to the middle class that folks can actually afford," President Biden said Monday, officially launching the application site. "If you have federal student debt, please visit StudentAid.gov. It's easy, simple and fast and it's a new day for millions of Americans all across our nation." Biden said the website has handled applications "without a glitch or any difficulty." The president, who was joined for the announcement by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, called the portal a "game changer" that would allow the government to better serve the public. The president's student loan forgiveness program, which he unveiled in August, is set to forgive $10,000 in federal student loan debt for borrowers earning under $125,000 and $20,000 for borrowers who received Pell Grants. Several conservative groups and Republican state officials have filed lawsuits seeking to shut down the program, but their filings have failed to gain traction because of lack of standing over who is harmed by the policy.
