Another topsy-turvy week looms as House Republicans aim to nominate a third Speaker pick. But it is not clear who, if anyone, can get to the number needed to clinch the gavel on the House floor — 217 votes, assuming all members are present and voting, which allows for just four GOP defections. At least nine Republicans are already running or seriously considering a bid for Speaker. |

The field of those vying to be the House GOP's third nominee for Speaker is quickly becoming crowded after the conference voted on Friday to drop House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). The conference pushed Jordan aside in a secret-ballot internal vote shortly after he lost a third House floor vote on Friday. Before Jordan, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) narrowly won the nomination — but withdrew his name a day later after supporters of Jordan refused to support him. Scalise said on Tuesday that he would not be seeking the nomination again. |

After Republicans voted Friday to no longer back House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) as its Speaker nominee, the House is scrambling to find a new candidate. The field of those vying to be the new nominee is quickly becoming crowded. One of the rumored hopefuls is House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.).
Here's what you need to know about Emmer. |

The Republican conference on Friday voted to no longer back House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) as its Speaker nominee. The secret ballot vote came hours after Jordan's third failed ballot on the House floor. He had lost GOP support with each successive vote. Friday marks the latest drama in the more than two-week saga since eight House Republicans joined with Democrats to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Oct. 3. |

President Biden on Friday took a swipe at House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), after the congressman failed to secure the speakership following three separate votes. "He just got his rear end kicked," Biden said at a fundraiser in Washington, D.C. The president recounted to supporters how Jordan failed to bring in the majority of votes needed to win the Speaker's gavel on the floor three times, leading the Republican conference to hold a secret ballot over whether to move on from the Ohio Republican as its Speaker nominee. |

A federal judge swiftly granted a request from former President Trump to pause her gag order limiting his speech in the election interference case while he appeals the decision. "The Gag Order violates virtually every fundamental principle of our First Amendment jurisprudence. It imposes an overbroad, content-based prior restraint on the leading Presidential candidate's core political speech," Trump's attorneys wrote in the filing. |

A New York judge fined former President Trump $5,000 Friday after a derogatory post about the judge's principal clerk was not removed from the 2024 candidate's campaign website, despite a clear order from the judge. Judge Arthur Engoron did not hold Trump in contempt of court, but he warned further violation of the gag order he imposed after Trump's Truth Social account made the post could result in serious punishment, including steeper financial penalties, contempt or even jail time. |

Israel faces immense risks as it prepares for a massive ground invasion of Gaza. A sweeping operation from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) into the coastal enclave will almost certainly intensify the humanitarian crisis there, along with civilian casualties. It also risks costing the lives of Israel's soldiers, turning global and domestic sentiment against Israel — as well as opening a second front in the war. |

Arab nations are publicly isolating Israel as it responds to Hamas's unprecedented terrorist attack, testing the boundaries of the U.S. led-Abraham Accords that was meant to usher in a new era of peace in the region. But American lawmakers argue the accords — brokered during the Trump administration that established ties between Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in 2020 — are still an important step toward Israel's integration in the region. And they still think the ultimate goal, a breakthrough on ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia, is possible. |

BY REP. ANDY BIGGS (R-ARIZ.) | OPINION | There is chaos on the border. Record numbers of illegal aliens surrender to CBP agents daily, and record numbers are getting away. The Biden administration is letting in almost 10,000 illegal border crossers into the country every day. Additional chaos occurs through President Biden's open border policy, with hundreds being killed daily by fentanyl and other drugs trafficked into the U.S. from Mexico. | OPINION | As most of the country is just gearing up for the next election, Virginia is already at the height of its election season. The November 2023 general election in the Commonwealth will give the country at look at what to expect in races across the country next year. And one of the most interesting variables to watch will be what the candidates and, ultimately, the voters have to say about abortion. In the last Virginia statewide elections in 2021, Republicans saw major wins, including all three state executive offices and a majority of seats in the House of Delegates. Virginia Republicans were able to achieve these victories by going on offense in their messaging on education and economic issues. |

During two decades in Israeli prison, Yahya Sinwar learned Hebrew fluently and devoured local newspapers and television. Now, the most senior Hamas leader in Gaza is using that knowledge to fight a war against Israel. |

BUENOS AIRES — The blast of a shofar echoed across the arena. A giant screen showed atomic bombs destroying cities. Then the image of a lion in flames appeared, and thousands of young men screamed. |
