What Trump wants from Hill Republicans |

Trump arrived on Capitol Hill to meet with Republicans in both chambers, starting first with House Republicans. Our reporters covering the House – Mike Lillis, Emily Brooks and Mychael Schnell – offered live updates as the meeting unfolded. Inside the room: Republicans sang Trump "Happy Birthday"; Trump quipped that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) should be nicer to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), whom she has threatened to try to oust; encouraged the use of tariffs and expressed caution to Republicans on how to speak about the issue of abortion. Trump also met with Senate Republicans with whom he has had past friction, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who endorsed Trump in March after presidential rival Nikki Haley dropped out. Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), who didn't initially plan on attending, and Bill Cassidy (R-La.) — both of whom who convicted Trump in at least one of the House impeachment trails — also were present, per our Senate reporters Alex Bolton and Al Weaver. The Senate meeting came as Republicans have looked to shore up unity within their ranks, as Alex Bolton noted this morning, particularly after a contentious GOP presidential primary and amid enduring tensions between some Trump skeptics and the presumptive White House nominee. For Republicans attending the meetings with Trump, it underscored the former president's hold on the GOP even as Trump has failed to win over some lawmakers. At the same time, the Capitol Hill appearance showed how Republicans are looking to get on the same page and map out their policy agenda on key issues. Looming over the party, however, is what happens next after Trump's conviction in his New York hush money case, where he was found guilty by a New York jury of falsifying business records. He has vowed to appeal that decision, but questions loom around whether the former president will be able to attend next month's Republican National Convention and how it will impact his candidacy moving forward. |

Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) is leading Republican candidate Kari Lake by 3 points in a new survey of one of this year’s most closely watched Senate races. An AARP poll released on Thursday found Gallego leading Lake 48 percent to 45 percent, with 6 percent undecided. Because the polling falls within the margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, the two are statistically tied. Broken down by party, 86 percent … |

Trump said in brief remarks to reporters following those meetings that he and the Republican lawmakers agree on "just about everything" and "work out" what they differ on. "I've had a great relationship with just about everybody here, … |

| New York Times columnist Bret Stephens this week suggested that President Biden should step aside to allow a rising Democrat to take his place in the presidential race. In an op-ed published Tuesday, Stephens argued that the only option left for Biden to clinch a “win” for the country would be to drop out of the race and let either Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) or Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) take the … |

Enthusiasm for a rematch between former President Trump and President Biden is rising as the two presumptive nominees remain neck and neck in national polling five months ahead of the election. A Monmouth University Poll, released Thursday, found that enthusiasm for each party's likely candidate, and the rematch between the two, has increased over the past few months. Just less than half of respondents show enthusiasm for the … |
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said he was disappointed in his Senate GOP colleagues for meeting with former President Trump on Thursday, calling Trump a "danger to American democracy." "I just get sick thinking about my Republican colleagues in the Senate, many of whom I consider to be friends, many of whom I know that support American democracy, watching them get behind this candidate that they know to be a danger to American … |

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) suggested that Hunter Biden's conviction in the federal gun charges case could create "an opening" for Michelle Obama to make a bid for the White House.
