Apple's announcement is the latest AI push from a tech giant, following AI advancements rolled out by Google, Microsoft and OpenAI in the past few weeks.
Apple leaned into a focus on how its update will be personalized for users, compared to other generative AI tools released.
Through Apple Intelligence, users will be able to prioritize a user's notifications or help re-write a user's language across apps, including in emails, notes or messages.
The feature will be included as part of the launch of the new iOS18, as well as updates coming to operating systems for the Mac and iPad, which will be released in the fall.
Apple also announced that use of its AI voice assistant Siri will be more advanced, allowing users to use more conversational context through follow up questions.
Through using Apple Intelligence and user context, users will be able to ask Siri specific questions to find information that may have been shared through an email or message without having to change which app the user is using. For example, a user can ask Siri what time a family member's flight will land without needing to check through past messages.
Users will also be able to ask Siri questions by typing in messages, rather than through voice commands.
Apple also announced a partnership with OpenAI to directly incorporate the company's ChatGPT tool into Apple products for free and without requiring users to make a separate account.
Another key update coming to iOS 18 is allowing its message app to support RCS, or Rich Communication Services, to its messaging app that will make messaging between an iPhone and an Android more alike to how it previously was between just iPhones.
The update will allow messages between the two devices to have end-to-end encryption as well as support higher quality images and videos and offer typing indicators.
Apple did not delve into more details about the ability to support RCS on the new iOS 18 during Monday's conference, but the change comes after pressure from European regulators.
