For the fashion-obsessed, the first Monday in May can only mean one thing: It's time for the Met Gala. Every year, the biggest names in art, culture, fashion, film, theater, music, sports, technology, and more gather for the ultra-exclusive, invite-only event that benefits The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. From Rihanna in a canary yellow Guo Pei gown to Cardi B in a pearl-encrusted headpiece, it's here that fashion history is learned—and made. This year, the theme is Tailored for You, in support of the Costume Institute's spring exhibition, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," so expect to see menswear-inspired looks. There's so much to look out for: I can't wait to see what Janelle Monáe, who is no stranger to chic suiting and always delivers on the Met Gala red carpet, wears, or if Beyoncé makes an appearance (she hasn't been to the Met Gala since 2016). Who will be the belle of the Met Ball? Stay up (fashionably) late with us and find out! |
The carpet has opened—and stars like Colman Domingo and Teyana Taylor have already made their way up the famous Met steps. VF's team of editors and experts takes you behind the scenes of some of the evening's best looks, ID'ing designers and keeping you in the know all night long. |

How will attendees interpret this year's theme? |
Don't miss a moment, and catch all the dandiacal arrivals as they happen. |
The president's sudden move to save the "dying" movie industry prompts many questions: How would it be implemented? What would he actually be taxing? And will Jon Voight be in charge? |
He's blaming Biden, droning on about dolls, and failing to say he'll uphold the Constitution. Such head-scratching spin is unlikely to improve his sinking polls. | |

In 2010, before he was a go-to for royals, first families, and Oprah, designer Prabal Gurung got his first invite to the Met Gala, for cocktails only. In his new memoir, Walk Like a Girl, he recalls his run-in with Oprah—and describes, more than a decade later, how much he and the event have changed.
The excerpt begins with a watershed moment in Gurung's career. After waking up to a stream of text messages, he discovered that Michelle Obama had worn one of his dresses to the White House Correspondents' Dinner: "Of all the racks of clothes to choose from, she selected this dress, which I had, once again, specifically draped to resemble my mother's sari." Later that same day, he received an email from someone at Vogue inviting him to the Met Gala pre-party cocktail hour—meaning he could walk the red carpet, but couldn't attend the dinner and after-party.
Inside the museum, he weaved his way through the glamorous crowd, mesmerized by attendees like Taylor Swift and Sarah Jessica Parker. He was soaking it all in, and then suddenly, someone shouted his name: "Prabal!" It was Oprah Winfrey.
Read on for more on Gurung's first Met Gala appearance—with Zoe Saldaña—and how it helped him rise the ranks in the fashion world. |
