President Trump suggested that Russia's war with Ukraine may be ending soon after Secretary of State Marco Rubio spent the weekend in Geneva negotiating a peace plan. Don't forget: Trump gave Ukraine a Thanksgiving deadline to agree to a deal — or else risk losing U.S. support.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: "Is it really possible that big progress is being made in Peace Talks between Russia and Ukraine???" Trump posted this morning. "Don't believe it until you see it, but something good just may be happening."
What we know about the negotiations: The U.S. and European delegations discussed a 28-point peace plan, which is backed by the White House and Moscow. However, it's widely seen as more favorable to Russia, making it controversial.
As of today, the 28-point plan has shrunk down to a 19-point plan after the U.S. and Ukraine met in "frenzied meetings", according to The Washington Post. But keep in mind that it hasn't been agreed upon yet.
It was a tense weekend: Trump lashed out at Ukraine, accusing Ukrainian leadership of expressing "zero gratitude" for the peace talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky then expressed his appreciation for the international effort to end the war. He pledged Ukraine would "never be an obstacle to peace," but stressed the importance of preserving his country's sovereignty and independence.
For what it's worth: European officials seem optimistic a deal could be agreed to by both Russia and Ukraine. Plus, American and Ukrainian officials issued a joint statement over the weekend, saying the talks were "constructive, focused and respectful," resulting in an "updated and refined peace framework."
