FEMA council expected to announce recommendations |
The Trump administration is set to unveil its plan this week to reform the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a proposal that is sure to be contentious but is not expected to go as far as earlier calls to eliminate the agency completely. | Earlier this year, President Trump established a FEMA Review Council, tasking the group — jointly led by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth — with making recommendations for changes. On Thursday, the group is expected to announce and publicly vote on its recommendations, likely laying out how the administration plans to reform FEMA, which it has accused of being bloated and inefficient. The plan will be presented at a meeting that will be available for public viewing online. Noem and Hegseth will lead the meeting, and members of the review council will vote on the proposal. The report will be made available for public comment. Earlier this year, both Trump and Noem floated nixing the agency altogether — and even fired an acting leader who advised against doing so. However, since that time, their rhetoric has shifted more toward reforming the agency, and in particular doling out less money to states. Recent news reports have included similar indications, saying the council is not expected to recommend axing the disaster response agency but could call for ending funding for states 10 years after a particular disaster and making FEMA its own Cabinet-level agency.
