Indiana Republican lawmakers took the extraordinary step Thursday of bucking President Trump's demand for the state to redraw its congressional map to make it more GOP-friendly.
It wasn't even close.
Trump had publicly pressured state lawmakers in the deep-red state to approve the new map, but the state Senate rejected it with a 19-31 vote — 21 Republicans joined Democrats in voting "no."
This has been the talk of the political world. Republicans are increasingly anxious about their prospects in the 2026 midterms.
Trump allies are furious over the move. And Indiana Gov. Mike Braun (R) said there will be "political consequences" for the Republican state senators who voted against the efforts, backing the president's vow to primary those lawmakers.
Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith (R) wrote in a since-deleted post on the social platform X that Trump threatened to withhold federal funding if state lawmakers rejected the new map.
The political arm of the conservative Heritage Foundation had also warned of federal funding being stripped from Indiana if the vote failed, a position that drew broad backlash.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) praised Indiana's efforts as a "good night for the American people.
