Last week Vanity Fair writer Dan Adler told me he was looking into a story about an OnlyFans model who is engaged to an affluent timeshare mogul and currently facing criminal charges for allegedly robbing the homes of wealthy older men and younger women whom she met through dating apps. (She has pleaded not guilty.) Then the woman’s fiancé, Stephen Cloobeck, became a side character in a totally different story: the implosion of Eric Swalwell’s political career. It turns out that Cloobeck donated $1 million to support Swalwell’s campaign for California governor and had been letting the now former Democratic congressman stay at his Beverly Hills mansion—which was the setting of an apology-and-denial video recorded late last week after multiple women came forward to accuse Swalwell of sexual misconduct. Dan quickly got on the phone with Cloobeck about his decision to ditch Swalwell—and the Democrats altogether—which he says he did only after checking on his mental health “because I’m a humanitarian.”
Elsewhere, Daniela Tijerina considers whether Coachella is even cool anymore, and Erin Vanderhoof tells us what not to expect from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s visit to Australia.
