Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley said he regrets participating in the photo opportunity with President Trump at St. John’s Church amid protests last week. https://bit.ly/3fflLXH

Milley said in a recorded message at a graduation this morning: “I should not have been there. My presence in that moment and in that environment created a perception of the military involved in domestic politics. As a commissioned, uniformed officer, it was a mistake that I have learned from.”

NEWS THIS MORNING

Another 1.5 million filed unemployment claims:

More than 1.5 million Americans filed new jobless claims last week, according to the Labor Department. https://bit.ly/2UBqzi2

Oh and: “Roughly 705,676 Americans also filed new claims for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), an extension of jobless benefits to workers who lost their jobs during the pandemic but do not qualify for standard unemployment insurance.”

For context: “More than 40 million Americans have filed new claims for unemployment benefits since March, and the economy had lost more than 21 million jobs before May's reversal. Even so, nearly 300,000 Americans lost their jobs permanently in May and more than 15 million others who are currently on temporary layoffs are at risk to join them.”

IN CONGRESS

All about those names:

Via Roll Call’s Niels Lesniewski, the GOP-controlled Senate Armed Services Committee voted on Wednesday to require the Pentagon to rename military bases that are named after Confederate leaders as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. https://bit.ly/2zt5zTy

How long the Defense Department would have to rename the military assets: Three years

Keep in mind: President Trump said he would veto any defense bill that requires renaming bases of Confederate leaders.

Who offered the amendment: Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.)

Kamala Harris is between a rock and a hard place:

Via The Hill’s Alexander Bolton, “Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who is now the front-runner to be Joe Biden’s running mate, is trying to straddle the divide on the left over police reform.” https://bit.ly/2UwPjYI

How so: “The death of George Floyd and subsequent calls from progressives to defund the police have put Harris, a former prosecutor, in a politically difficult position. How she handles the emotionally charged issue over the next several weeks could determine whether she is tapped for the 2020 ticket.”

What Harris is saying when she is asked whether she supports defunding the police: “She has responded by trying to clarify what police defunding means and to argue that it’s not the radical move that opponents portray it as. She has also framed the question of police funding in the broader context of a discussion about how a city, town or community can best allocate money among various priorities, arguing that investing in education, job creation and affordable health care are better ways to create safe and prosperous communities.”

Via The Hill’s Amie Parnes, “Joe Biden is making a concerted effort to court young voters to his presidential campaign, particularly around the demonstrations that have taken place in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd.” https://bit.ly/3dU9lnT

“Democrats say Biden still has a long way to go to win over millennials and Generation Z voters, many of whom were drawn to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and his calls for ‘Medicare for All’ and tuition-free college during the Democratic primary.”
