MAJOR NEWS FROM THE SUPREME COURT

The Supreme Court ruled to block the Trump administration from ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that protects nearly 700,000 young undocumented immigrants from deportation. https://bit.ly/2AD53mx

The decision: 5-4

The surprising part of the ruling: Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the liberal justices.

The majority opinion: The justices say the Trump administration failed to give adequate reasoning for ending the program. “The dispute before the Court is not whether [Department of Homeland Security] may rescind DACA. All parties agree that it may. The dispute is instead primarily about the procedure the agency followed in doing so,” Roberts wrote in the opinion.

What this means for DACA: “The ruling keeps intact a program that is open to an estimated 1.3 million noncitizens who are eligible for DACA by virtue of having been brought to the U.S. as children, and who have maintained residency and meet the education or military service requirements and other criteria.”

What this means for Trump: it upended a key campaign platform for President Trump

THE REACTION WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR — FROM PRESIDENT TRUMP:

“These horrible & politically charged decisions coming out of the Supreme Court are shotgun blasts into the face of people that are proud to call themselves Republicans or Conservatives. We need more Justices or we will lose our 2nd. Amendment & everything else. Vote Trump 2020!” https://bit.ly/3hyQ65o

Trump also added: “Do you get the impression that the Supreme Court doesn’t like me?” https://bit.ly/2AFnbfD

OTHER REACTIONS:

What you will be hearing about: “Your Thursday down here will be dominated John Roberts again getting the Mitt Romney love/hate treatment in voting with the liberal wing of SCOTUS in rejecting Trump admin bid to end legal protections for DREAMERS. 5-4 decision.” (Via The Hill’s Joe Concha

From Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.): “The most disappointing week at #SCOTUS in years” https://bit.ly/3eqInEN

From former President Barack Obama’s speechwriter: “In 2018, 85% of Americans supported DACA, including 79% of Republicans. Finger on the pulse yet again!” https://bit.ly/30Vat6Q

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he “cried tears of joy”: "I cried tears of joy a few minutes ago when I heard the decision of the Supreme Court on DACA. These wonderful DACA kids and their families have a huge burden lifted off of their shoulders. They don't have to worry about being deported. They can do their jobs, and I believe ... someday soon they will be American citizens.” https://bit.ly/311nqfo

From House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.): "The Supreme Court decision upholding President Obama's wonderful action to support our Dreamers. The DACA decision is something that supports our values as a country...this way is the American way and we've very proud of it." Watchhttps://bit.ly/3fzJmm4

LATEST WITH POLICE REFORM

Hello, rock! *Hiya*

Good day, hard place! *Howdy!*:

Via The Hill’s Alexander Bolton, Sen. Schumer (D-N.Y.) is in a tough spot deciding where to support Senate Republicans’ police reform bill even though the legislation falls short of what Democrats want.

The pro of supporting the bill: It will allow the legislation to move forward and increases the likelihood of any police reform legislation getting signed into law.

The con of supporting the bill: It will disappoint Democrats and will give President Trump a pretty big victory a few months before Election Day.

Why Schumer’s support will make or break the bill: Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate. For the bill to move forward, Republicans will need seven Democratic or independent senators.

A worry for Schumer: If he lets the bill move forward to a floor debate, Democrats will have little power to amend it.

IN THE WHITE HOUSE

On today’s episode of Maury: West Wing Edition…:

In an interview with ABC News, Former White House national security adviser John Bolton tore (and I mean TORE) into President Trump’s presidency.

Ouch: “I don’t think he’s fit for office,” Bolton said. “I don’t think he has the competence to carry out the job. There really isn’t any guiding principle that I was able to discern other than, ‘What’s good for Donald Trump’s reelection?’ ”

When the interview will air: Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT.

The timing of Bolton’s comments are not random:

Bolton’s interview will air just two days before Simon & Schuster releases his book, “The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir." https://bit.ly/2YNCY3H

NEWSY EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK:

Bolton describes Trump as ‘stunningly uninformed’: "He second-guessed people's motives, saw conspiracies behind rocks, and remained stunningly uninformed on how to run the White House, let alone the huge federal government," Bolton writes. The gist of the book, via The Hill’s Reid Wilsonhttps://bit.ly/3d8jnR2

Bolton says Trump asked China to help him win reelection: At the Group of 20 summit in June last year, President Trump asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help him win reelection. (Via The Washington Post’s Josh DawseyDetailshttps://wapo.st/3d8L8ZD

Bolton says the impeachment inquiry missed a few incidents: “Bolton describes several episodes where the president expressed a willingness to halt criminal investigations ‘to, in effect, give personal favors to dictators he liked,’ citing cases involving major firms in China and Turkey. ‘The pattern looked like obstruction of justice as a way of life, which we couldn’t accept,’ Mr. Bolton writes, saying that he reported his concerns to Attorney General William P. Barr.”  (Via The New York Times’s Peter Bakerhttps://nyti.ms/3daV0SD

Pompeo slipped Bolton a note: “During the president’s 2018 meeting with North Korea’s leader, according to the book, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo slipped Mr. Bolton a note disparaging the president, saying, ‘He is so full of s---.’” (Via The New York Times’s Peter Bakerhttps://nyti.ms/3daV0SD

Five takeaways from the bookhttps://nyti.ms/2AEh2QP

NEW YORK TIMES REVIEW OF THE BOOK — OUUUUUCH:

The New York Times’s Jennifer Szalai published a pretty scathing review of Bolton’s upcoming book.

This line: “The book is bloated with self-importance, even though what it mostly recounts is Bolton not being able to accomplish very much. It toggles between two discordant registers: exceedingly tedious and slightly unhinged.”

WHEN THE BOOK WILL BE RELEASED:

On June 23. See it on Amazonhttps://amzn.to/3d8iLuI

President Trump is doing accidental PR for the book:

President Trump lashed out at Bolton as “washed up” and a “liar.” https://bit.ly/3dbWQCT

Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity: “He broke the law …  He was a washed-up guy. I gave him a chance. He couldn’t get Senate confirmed so I gave him a non-Senate confirmed position where I could just put him there, see how he worked.”

And Trump tweeted: “Wacko John Bolton’s ‘exceedingly tedious’ (New York Times) book is made up of lies & fake stories. Said all good about me, in print, until the day I fired him. A disgruntled boring fool who only wanted to go to war. Never had a clue, was ostracized & happily dumped. What a dope!” https://bit.ly/2BlClGw
