President Biden on Tuesday signed an historic marriage equality law during a celebration at the White House with 2,000 attendees. "Today is a good day — a day America takes a vital step toward equality," Biden said during the South Lawn event. "The road to this moment was long, but those who believe in equality and justice, you never gave up." The Respect for Marriage Act passed the House and Senate last week with bipartisan support in each chamber. It includes language outlining some protections for religious beliefs. Biden had been a key champion of the legislation for several years. "Marriage is a simple proposition. Who do you love? And will you be loyal to that person you love?" he said. "It's not more complicated than that. We all recognize that everyone should have the right to answer those questions for themselves without the government interference." Read more here. |
