Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) says Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.) can keep her committee assignments — even though she dropped her affiliation with the Democratic Party in a surprise move Friday and said she would identify as an Independent going forward. That means Sinema's shift will not affect Democrats' control of Senate committees, which is crucial to the ability to issue subpoenas and discharge legislation without Republican support. Democrats celebrated earlier this month that they had secured a 51-member majority (including two members who already identified as Independents but who caucus with the Democrats before Sinema's announcement) after a crucial win in the Georgia Senate race between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) and Republican challenger Herschel Walker. "Sen. Sinema informed me of her decision to change her affiliation to Independent. She asked me to keep her committee assignments and I agreed," Schumer said in a statement. "Kyrsten is independent; that's how she's always been. I believe she's a good and effective Senator and am looking forward to a productive session in the new Democratic majority Senate," Schumer continued. "We will maintain our new majority on committees, exercise our subpoena power, and be able to clear nominees without discharge votes." Sinema currently sits on the Senate Banking, Commerce, Homeland Security and Veterans' Affairs committees. More on Sinema's announcement from The Hill: |
