Good Monday evening. This is Daniel Allott with The Hill's Top Opinions.
Things are finally looking up for Democrats, write Democratic consultants DOUGLAS SCHOEN AND ZOE YOUNG. So much so that "the Democratic Party [has] a better-than-expected chance of retaining their Senate majority."
How did this happen? The Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade, and GOP's rush to ban abortion without exceptions in some states, has helped make protecting abortion rights a motivating issue for voters. Democrats are also helped by a less-than-stellar group of Republican candidates for Senate. And by signing his hallmark spending bill the Inflation Reduction Act, Joe Biden has breathed new life into a presidency many had already written off.
The authors strike a note of caution: Biden's job approval ratings are still historically low, most Americans still feel the country is on the wrong track and, of course, anything can happen in the roughly 70 days between now and Election Day.
But Schoen and Young have analyzed the polling data and conclude that at this moment the "Democrats are clearly on a roll."
