President Trump announced his third presidential bid on Tuesday, marking exactly one week after the midterm elections. Trump made the announcement standing in front of a number of American flags in a ballroom at his Mar-A-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
It would appear that Trump and his allies planned for the event to be a post-midterm victory lap for Republicans, specifically the former president and his endorsed candidates. However, Trump's much anticipated announcement followed an underperformance from the GOP in the midterms, which saw the party lose any hopes of reclaiming the Senate majority and a number of key governor's races. The party appears on track to win back the House, but by a much narrower margin than expected.
The Hill's Max Greenwood was in the room where it happened in Mar-A-Lago and has details here.
Reactions: And while the the announcement was expected, much of the political world issued statements and reactions following the announcement, which officially kicks of the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
President Biden's Twitter account rolled out a video of the the former president's record on the economy, health care, women's rights, extremism, and the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
The right-leaning New York Post, which has supported Trump in the past, ran with the headline "Been there, Don that."
Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, who was not present at the announcement on Tuesday, reacted by saying she was taking a break from politics.
"I love my father very much. This time around, I am choosing to prioritize my young children and the private life we are creating as a family. I do not plan to be involved in politics," Ivanka Trump said in a statement posted on her Instagram story.
A few praises: And while numerous Republicans have expressed skepticism or outright opposition to Trump's bid, he has received praise from his supporters.
Kari Lake, who has yet to concede Arizona's gubernatorial contest after losing to Democrat Katie Hobbs, wrote on Twitter that he has her "complete and total endorsement!"
Former Trump critic turned staunch supporter Sen. Lindsey Graham tweeted that the former president would be "hard to beat" in an election.
And on Wednesday, conservative Rep. Jim Jordan tweeted that Trump "did more of what he said he'd do than any President in our lifetime. Period."
