House Democrats have officially elected Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) to head the party in the next Congress, marking a generational shift after 20 years under the leadership of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) while making Jeffries the first Black figure in history to lead either party in Congress. The shift didn't come as a surprise when Wednesday's vote was taken but still marked a historical milestone. Pelosi and two long-time allies announced earlier this month they would step out of the top leadership spots, leaving the 52-year-old Jeffries as one of three next-generation leaders to solidify their place as uncontested picks for rarely-opened leadership roles. Rep. Katherine Clark (Mass.) will replace Rep. Steny Hoyer (Md.) as the second-ranking Democrat next year, while Rep. Pete Aguilar (Calif.) will fill the vacancy left by Rep. Jim Clyburn (S.C.) at the No. 3 spot. Read more here. |
