Good Thursday evening. This is Daniel Allott with The Hill's Top Opinions.
The political world is fixated on what promises to be a dramatic election night. But it's in the days following the midterms when the real fireworks may begin in the form of Donald Trump's announcement about whether he intends to run for president in 2024 and Attorney General Merrick Garland's announcement about whether the Justice Department will pursue an indictment of citizen Trump over his alleged role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
With these two decisions looming, writes political commentator MYRA ADAMS, "Americans should brace themselves for turmoil mirroring pre-Civil War levels of hatred and mayhem with the potential for violence."
Adams believes Trump will announce first, declaring his intention to seek the presidency soon after the midterms.
By waiting until after Trump makes his announcement, Garland could put "space between pursuing justice and presidential politics." Who knows, she writes, maybe "DOJ could also spice up its indictment press conference with a surprise announcement on Jan. 6, 2023."
Things could get really interesting if Republicans take control of Congress and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) – who has suggested he'd pursue impeachment of both Garland and President Biden – chairs the House Judiciary Committee.
"With friends like Jordan," Adams concludes, "Trump's Revenge Campaign will prosper, and, per usual, Trump wins even when he loses, is impeached or indicted."
