| Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's battle with Disney has gone too far in the view of some Republican lawmakers who are growing increasingly worried about preserving the GOP's traditional reputation as a pro-business party focused on economic growth and job creation. Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), who served as Florida's governor from 2011 to 2019, says it's time for "cooler heads to prevail," noting Disney is a major employer that draws in huge numbers of tourists who boost the state economy. |

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said Friday there is "zero" chance he will back down from his dispute with Disney, even as some fellow Republicans urge caution. "[Disney] can do whatever they want," DeSantis said during a stop at a diner in Manchester, N.H. "I know people try to chirp and say this or that, but the chance of us backing down from that is zero." |

Republicans and the White House resumed debt ceiling talks on Friday evening after frustrated GOP negotiators hit pause for much of the day. Emerging from the meeting in the Capitol, which lasted roughly an hour and a half, Rep. Garret Graves (R-La.), the lead GOP negotiator, said the group had a "candid discussion." |

| The White House on Friday night tempered its optimism about ongoing talks with Republicans on a budget agreement and debt ceiling increase, acknowledging the two sides have "serious differences" heading into the weekend. "We have serious differences and this is going to continue to be a difficult conversation. That's not lost on us," press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters in Japan, where President Biden is attending the Group of Seven (G-7) Summit. |

National security adviser Jake Sullivan said that while the debt limit talks have been a subject of interest at the Group of Seven (G-7) summit, President Biden has "expressed confidence" to world leaders in avoiding a default. "It is definitely a subject of interest," Sullivan told reporters during a Saturday morning press conference in Japan. "Here at the G-7, you know, countries want to have a sense of how these negotiations are going to play out and the president has expressed confidence that he believes that we could drive to an outcome that we do avoid default." |

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), the first member of Congress to call for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to resign, doubled down on his request this week following new details about her health, saying, "it's sad for anyone to see." |

Republican worries are growing that Colorado is slipping further into the hands of Democrats after recent defeats and close calls in the most conservative parts of the state. The latest blow to the GOP in the Centennial State came this week when Republicans lost the mayoral race in Colorado Springs, marking the first time in decades that a member of the party wouldn't take the helm of the conservative bastion. |

Nebraska lawmakers on Friday gave final approval to legislation that bans gender-affirming health care for transgender minors and prohibits abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy, sending the measure to Republican Gov. Jim Pillen. Pillen is expected to sign the bill — which state lawmakers passed by a 33-15 party-line vote — into law on an emergency clause, which means the measure will take effect immediately. | |

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) signed two gun safety initiatives into law on Friday that will establish universal background checks and a process for temporarily removing firearms from those who imminently pose a threat to themselves or others. Walz signed the measures into law as part of a broader public safety budget bill after it narrowly passed by one vote along party lines in the state Senate last week. |

A political action committee to get former Fox News host Tucker Carlson to run for president is making its launch with an ad that praises him for mocking "woke nonsense" — and is aiming to pull the GOP presidential field to the right. The Draft Tucker PAC, a hybrid PAC that filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission in late April shortly after Carlson was ousted from Fox News, debuted an ad on Thursday evening that is set for an initial weeklong ad on the conservative Newsmax cable channel next week. |

OPINION | Republicans in Congress seem to be channeling their inner Dave Ramsey and embracing his crazy idea that you shouldn't spend more than you take in. This isn't the first time Americans have seen this show, and yet our national debt is now greater than $31 trillion.
Clearly, the crowd that adheres to Ramsey's "debt is dumb" mantra is losing out to the "debt is a lot easier and more fun" crowd. |
OPINION | Last week, the Biden administration lifted the Title 42 order put in place by President Trump, which for several years had in effect closed the U.S.-Mexico border to migrants. Rather than the feared stampede at the border, the end of Title 42 simply returned the border to the system that has stumbled along for decades. The task now is how to reform that system so that it responds effectively and efficiently to manage the 21st century of global migration. |

Disney's battle with Florida's Republican governor and soon-to-be presidential contender, Ron DeSantis, is playing out like a reality TV show. And while Disney's tactical maneuvering — most recently, abandoning a $1 billion office project near Orlando — has dominated headlines, that partly overshadows a less-cinematic reality: Disney's business is struggling. |
Progressive lawmakers renewed their call for President Joe Biden to bypass Congress to avert a default after the abrupt cancellation of debt ceiling talks on Friday. But the White House remains resistant. It issued a subdued statement indicating it sees no reason to pull the plug on talks. And privately, its message has been even blunter. |
