Trump classified documents trial set for May 2024: |
Former President Trump has tried to push back his trial date in Florida until after the 2024 election, but it doesn't look like that will happen. Judge Aileen Cannon is aiming for May 2024 for the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case to head to court. But, but, but... Cannon did appear to agree at least in part with the Trump team's position that the case is so complex the government's December goal isn't realistic. "By conservative estimates, the amount of discovery in this case is voluminous and likely to increase in the normal course as trial approaches. And, while the Government has taken steps to organize and filter the extensive discovery, no one disagrees that Defendants need adequate time to review and evaluate it on their own accord," Cannon wrote, a Trump appointee. This new timeline puts the trial in the heart of GOP primary season, when many states will have already had their elections. Of course, legal timelines are always in flux, so the dates could shift, but this is the first clear signal of where things are heading for the former president's legal issues, at least in this case. You'll remember: Trump, along with aide Walt Nauta, have pleaded not guilty after being accused of hiding classified documents that were taken from the White House to Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort as the former president left office in January 2021. Biden, businesses aim to get ahead of AI issues: |
President Biden later today is set to address concerns about the growing field of artificial intelligence, which is sparking questions in multiple industries. But first, the White House has shored up voluntary commitments from seven top companies to try to get out ahead of the risks. Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Facebook parent company Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI are all pledging to try to manage disinformation, including watermarking and other efforts to signify AI-generated comment for viewers and listeners. They'll meet with Biden at the White House to formally announce the deal. From a White House official who spoke to The Hill: "Companies have a duty to do right by individuals and society and earn the American peoples' trust by making it easy for users to tell whether audio and visual content is in its original form or has been altered or generated by AI, preventing bias and discrimination, shielding our children from harm and helping society overcome our greatest challenges, from cancer to climate change." Trump's been chilly toward the debate talk, but his rivals hope to turn up the heat: |
Some of former President Trump's GOP presidential rivals have become increasingly agitated with signs the frontrunner may skip directly debating them. The Hill's Brett Samuels reports: "Trump has repeatedly signaled he is leaning against attending the first debate, scheduled for Aug. 23 in Milwaukee, arguing there's no reason for him to stand on stage and absorb attacks given his comfortable lead in national polls." His rivals, though, who have generally struggled to break through the Trump chatter and are searching for a way to sway voters, are publicly going after the former president's hints he may not even show up. "The other candidates want him to be there because, for one thing, it juices interest and ratings in the debate itself if Trump is participating, and they are hoping to attract some attention to themselves, and they won't be able to attract as much if fewer people are watching," David Hopkins, an associate professor of political science at Boston College, tells Samuels. It's our day, Barbie girls (and Kens)!: |
"We're Barbie! He's just Ken." (Feel free to insert whatever lawmaker you want in the movie slogan there)... It's the long-awaited release of the "Barbie" movie, and I hope you'll be celebrating in style like me and my crew. Put on some pink and have some fun, as Barbie girls (and guys) unite! Of course, in The District there is always a political connection: Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) have already ripped the movie ahead of its debut over a detail in an early trailer — a scene that briefly shows a cartoon map that depicts parts of the South China Sea that Vietnam claims but portraying it as Chinese territory. Notably, Cruz admitted he hasn't seen the movie and doesn't think the "little girls" who go to the show will understand what "nine dashes" mean in that brief clip of the map in question. 🤷 (More from The Hill here) Don't miss: This tweet is prompting speculation about which senators will be heading to the movies this weekend. |

| }Former President Obama has released his annual summer playlist with the likes of Drake, SZA and Stevie Wonder making appearances this time around. "Like I do every year, here are some songs I've been listening to this summer — a mix of old and new," Obama tweeted with his list of 41 song recommendations. "Look forward to hearing what I've missed." Wildcard: "Walk Like an Egyptian," from the Bangles. The 1986 song is definitely still a bop, but it's just a bit random for Obama's playlist...
