Two high-profile incidents in quick succession involving Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) have put the issue of aging politicians front and center. But the questions raised around mental capacity and fitness for office have no easy answers. Proposals that might begin to address the issue, such as term limits or cognitive tests beyond a certain age, confront an instant Catch-22. In order to be enacted, they need the support of politicians who might be negatively impacted by them. |

Democratic lawmakers are criticizing Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's recent interviewwith the Wall Street Journal in which he stated "no provision" in the Constitution allows Congress to regulate the Supreme Court. "I know this is a controversial view, but I'm willing to say it," Alito said Friday, referencing Congressional Democrats' recent efforts to to mandate stronger ethics rules. "No provision in the Constitution gives them the authority to regulate the Supreme Court—period." |

The House Republicans who craft the conference's government funding bills are showing signs of frustration as hard-line conservatives pressure leadership for further cuts to spending that some worry could be too aggressive. Some of the 12 Appropriations subcommittee chairs — the so-called cardinals — told reporters that they are struggling to see where those additional cuts could come from, as September's shutdown deadline looms. |

Former President Trump's outsized influence is already being felt in GOP Senate primaries, underscoring his grip on the party even as he faces numerous primary challengers in the 2024 White House race. Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, who's running to replace Sen. Sherrod Brown (D), endorsed Trump's presidential bid earlier this week. West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R), who's running to unseat Sen. Joe Manchin (D), did the same — prompting his GOP primary rival Alex Mooney to point out that he had come out in support of Trump last year. |

Former President Trump was met with a chorus of "no's" when he asked those in attendance at a rally in Erie, Pa., on Saturday if he should participate in the first GOP presidential debate next month. Trump noted that he has received many questions about whether he will attend the first debate hosted by Fox News in Milwaukee on Aug. 23. He has previously hinted that he might skip the debate, arguing that Fox is a "hostile network" and his strong polling that positions him as the frontrunner should mean that he does not need to debate with the other candidates who are far behind him. |

A crowded field of GOP White House contenders clamoring for the party's nomination are expected to gather in Milwaukee next month for the party's first presidential debate of the 2024 cycle. But before candidates can get on the Aug. 23 debate stage, they must first qualify by meeting several requirements set by the Republican National Committee (RNC). Candidates need at least 40,000 unique donors to their principal presidential campaign committee, including at least 200 from 20 or more states and territories each. |

Former President Trump called for a pause on all aid to Ukraine until several federal agencies provide "every scrap" of evidence they have on alleged "corrupt business dealings" from President Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. Trump said at a rally in Erie, Pa., on Saturday that Biden has been "dragging" the country into conflict with the war between Russia and Ukraine and referenced the copy of the unverified tip that congressional Republicans released last week purporting to show evidence of a scheme to bribe Biden. |

Russia has entered a dangerous new phase of its war against Ukraine since it exited the Black Sea grain deal earlier this month, weaponizing global food exports, stepping up attacks on Ukrainian ports and cities and increasing the risk of spillover into NATO countries. Russia's escalation is unlikely to deter the U.S. and allies from following through on delivering F-16 fighter jets and long-range missiles to Ukraine in the coming months, which Moscow has repeatedly warned against. |

Former FBI agent Peter Strzok claimed on Saturday that the new charges brought against former President Trump in the Mar-a-Lago documents case highlight "the danger that he poses to national security." "This indictment just gets much worse for Trump," Strzok said on MSNBC. "It highlights the danger that he poses to national security, and it really shows what he was doing to try and undermine the judicial process." |

Former President Trump on Saturday mocked fellow Republican presidential candidate Will Hurd, after he was booed during an Iowa GOP event the night before for slamming Trump amid his growing legals woes. "In Iowa last night I noticed that a little known, failed former Congressman, Will Hurd, is ridiculously running for President," the former president posted on Truth Social. "He quit Congress because it would have been impossible for him to win in his district — he did a really bad job." |

OPINION | There's an interesting development on the way to the 2024 presidential election. Two outsiders shunned or ignored by the entrenched establishments of both political parties, as well as much of the mainstream media, are connecting with actual voters in a very real way: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on the Democratic side and Vivek Ramaswamy on the Republican. As to why they are outsiders, let's start with Kennedy. Much of why the entrenched establishment can't stand him, while millions of Americans are flocking to his vision for our nation, was encapsulated during a townhall-style interview hosted by Fox News anchor Sean Hannity this week. |
OPINION | The student debt forgiveness movement took a major hit when the Supreme Court struck down the Biden Administration's loan forgiveness plan. But many advocates have pivoted to a new proposal: canceling student loan interest. A growing number of people from both the right and left have concluded that student loan interest is unnecessary, or even harmful. Critics portray student loan interest as a runawayexpense that unfairly sneaks up on borrowers. When compared to outright debt forgiveness, slashing interest rates could sound like a moderate compromise. Congressional Democrats just introduced legislation to cut student loan interest rates to zero percent. |

At a moment of growing legal peril, Donald Trump ramped up his calls for his GOP rivals to drop out of the 2024 presidential race as he threatened to primary Republican members of Congress who fail to focus on investigating Democratic President Joe Biden and urged them to halt Ukrainian military aid until the White House cooperates with their investigations into Biden and his family. |

Trump's Save America PAC spent more than $40 million on legal costs in the first half of 2023 to defend him, his advisers and others. While interviewing potential witnesses, prosecutors have raised questions about who is paying for their lawyers and why. | They served in Congress and on the N.R.A.'s board at the same time. Over decades, a small group of legislators led by a prominent Democrat pushed the gun lobby to help transform the law, the courts and views on the Second Amendment. |
Russia's Defense Ministry said it had brought down three Ukrainian drones early on Sunday that had been trying to attack Moscow. |
