Voters head to polls in Rhode Island and Utah |
Voters are heading to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in special primary elections to fill vacancies in two House districts in Rhode Island and Utah. |
The elections come after announcements from former Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) and Rep. Chris Stewart (R-Utah) that they would resign from their seats. Cicilline stepped down in June, while Stewart plans to leave later this month, both after having served a decade in Congress. Cicilline left his position to become president and CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation, while Stewart cited his wife's health issues as the reason why he needed to retire from his seat. The races are happening in Rhode Island's 1st and Utah's 2nd congressional district, which are solidly blue and red districts, respectively. The winners of the Democratic primary in Rhode Island and GOP primary in Utah will likely be elected in the general elections in November. More than half a dozen Democrats are running for Cicilline's seat in Rhode Island. Some of the most notable candidates include Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos, former state Rep. Aaron Regunberg and Gabe Amo, a former Biden administration staffer. Matos has garnered endorsements from several House members and notable Democratic groups like EMILY's List and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, while Regunberg has the backing of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and several more progressive House members and organizations. In Utah, a few Republicans are competing for the nomination — former Stewart staffer Celeste Maloy, former Republican National Committee representative Bruce Hough and former state Rep. Becky Edwards. Stewart has endorsed Maloy for the seat. |

DeSantis returns to the campaign trail |
© Stephen M. Dowell /Orlando Sentinel via AP |
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is returning to the campaign trail this week after leading his state's response to Hurricane Idalia. The storm presented an opportunity to DeSantis to showcase his leadership skills as the state's executive after he largely received praise for his handling of Hurricane Ian last year. President Biden and DeSantis were in touch every day in the lead-up to and during the storm, and the two of them have put their political differences aside in the past in visiting the Surfside building collapse in 2021 and touring the storm damage from Ian. But DeSantis and Biden did not meet following Idalia as the Florida governor is running for the 2024 GOP nomination for president. The governor's office said DeSantis did not plan to meet with Biden as their meeting could strain Florida's disaster response. Federal Emergency Management Administration administrator Deanne Criswell said Biden and DeSantis's teams agreed on the location for Biden's visit to Florida in advance, but DeSantis did not give an "indication" that he would not be meeting with Biden. Now, the DeSantis campaign announced Tuesday that he would be resuming his campaign activities this week with the hurricane in rearview. |

John Bolton suggested Tuesday that Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy "emulates" former President Trump "every time he can," as the political newcomer continues to isolate himself from the rest of the GOP with his controversial stance on Ukraine. "I think Ramaswamy reminds me an awful lot of Donald Trump," Bolton said in a Tuesday morning interview on CNN. "He has very firm opinions on subjects he knows absolutely … |
