House Dems urge Biden officials to act on home-energy rebates |
Dozens of Democrats called on Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm to take swifter action to implement an energy-efficiency program that offers rebates for home upgrades. |
In the letter, led by Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), the more than 60 lawmakers warned that without speedy action on final guidance, the rebates themselves may be delayed until fall 2024 or later. "DOE should immediately disburse early administrative funds so that program administrators can hire staff, develop plans, and stand up their rebate program," they wrote to the Department of Energy (DOE). The lawmakers added that the only way to "mitigate the potential loss of two years of rebates is to allow program administrators to make rebates available retroactive to the date of [Inflation Reduction Act] enactment," which occurred in 2022. The IRA included about $9 billion in financial aid for energy-efficiency appliances, including heat pumps, induction stoves and washing machines and dryers.
