From punchline to president? |
In the short time that Kamala Harris has been the Democrats' presidential nominee in waiting, "something surprising has happened," writes columnist Matt Lewis. Harris "seems more fun, more stable and (dare I say) less cringey than she has for the past three or four years." |

Lewis sees the change in Harris's speeches, her demeanor and her fundraising prowess – and even in her online meme game. And she presents "a charming and youthful contrast when compared with Biden and Donald Trump." So, can Harris sustain the momentum she's building? The deeper question, says Lewis, is whether she can reverse or at least improve the negative impression she has made on many voters. Time will tell, of course. But three and a half years as vice president has afforded Harris time to learn, grow and rediscover her voice. "She had time to be introspective and reflect on her past political mistakes." If Harris can make a few adjustments, "pick a qualified and competent running mate, look competent and strong — and avoid being defined and destroyed by Trump and his team — she could put Democrats back in the game." Under Xi, the term "reform" has been redefined. Xi has clarified that moving towards Western "universal values" and political systems is a misinterpretation. The Third Plenary Session reaffirmed that reforms must maintain the CCP's leadership, adherence to Marxism, socialism with Chinese characteristics and the people's democratic dictatorship. |

I learned about Vance's land from his book, "Hillbilly Elegy." I remember being struck by the similarities between Appalachia and even a pre-war Ukraine — kind, simple people suffering from evil largely beyond their control. |
