When your lifelong dream of a career—ultracompetitive, all-encompassing, guts-and-glory great—happens to be one that lasts, on average, three short seasons, what do you do when it's over? It's a question that can hit NFL players as hard and fast as a defensive back at the goal line. Each year, 24 current and former players go looking for the answer at the Broadcast Boot Camp, a talent incubator held in April at the NFL's West Coast headquarters in Inglewood, California. VF contributing editor Tom Kludt jetted out to embed with the campers as they traded their shoulder pads and mouthguards for mics and green screens. They spent three days getting schooled in the art of on-air commentary—receiving feedback on everything from their word choices to their outfits and body language—hoping to win over scouts from ESPN, Fox, and more. Clear voices, big smiles, can't lose.
Elsewhere, an exclusive first look at Chloé Zhao's Hamnet, a journey back to 2005 for Jennifer Aniston's first interview post–Brad Pitt divorce, and an inside take on Diddy's ongoing legal strategy. Back with more next week. |
Jason Kelce, Richard Sherman, and Nate Burleson went from the gridiron to the greenroom with the help of NFL's Broadcasting and Media Workshop, which is better known by its original, punchier title, the Broadcast Boot Camp. The program has become a prolific talent incubator, with alums scattered throughout the NFL's vast media ecosystem: from ESPN to CBS to Prime Video. |

The whole world watched as her "perfect" marriage fell apart. Only her closest friends knew what really happened.
