WEEKEND PROTESTS

Peaceful daytime protests this weekend over the death of George Floyd devolved into violence each night as rioters and looters vandalized cities across the U.S.

Important to remember about the protest coverage you’re seeing on TV: CNN’s Leigh Munsil pointed out, “Lots of reporters on the scenes are (rightly) reminding viewers that for many hours during the day, these protests were peaceful. The images of what happens during the night are important and urgent, absolutely, but remember the full picture.” https://bit.ly/3gJOtBl

“Mr. Trump remained cloistered inside, periodically sending out Twitter messages like ‘LAW & ORDER!’ until the evening, when he went quiet. While some aides urged him to keep off Twitter, Mr. Trump could not resist blasting out a string of messages earlier in the day berating Democrats for not being tough enough and attributing the turmoil to radical leftists.” https://nyti.ms/3eC1XNR

JOURNALISTS CAUGHT IN THE VIOLENCE:

An injured journalist in New York: The Wall Street Journal’s Tyler Blint-Welsh tweeted, “Lost my glasses and my ankle is in searing pain after NYPD hit me in the face multiple times with riot shields and pushed me to the ground. AROUND THE COUNTRY:

If you haven’t been following on social media — I’ve seen dozens, maybe hundreds, of powerful images, videos and stories of the weekend protests on social media, but here are just a few of the trending posts:

IN THE WHITE HOUSE

Trump slams the Biden campaign for donating bail money:

President Trump criticized campaign staff of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden for donating money to help Minnesota protesters pay bail. https://bit.ly/3dnycjF

Trump tweeted: “Sleepy Joe Biden’s people are so Radical Left that they are working to get the Anarchists out of jail, and probably more. Joe doesn’t know anything about it, he is clueless, but they will be the real power, not Joe. They will be calling the shots! Big tax increases for all, Plus!” https://bit.ly/3eKtrkB

This is an especially important moment for President Trump:

Via The Hill’s Niall Stanage, “The gravest civil unrest in half a century is piling pressure on a president who has usually been more adept at exploiting America’s divisions than healing them … For President Trump, the turmoil is the latest wave in the sea of troubles that now encircles his reelection hopes.” https://bit.ly/3gL4dEf

First: “The coronavirus crisis has claimed more than 100,000 American lives and is the worst public health disaster in a century. Widespread lockdowns in response to the threat of COVID-19 have catapulted the nation’s unemployment rate past the highest levels seen during the Great Recession a decade ago. Unemployment was at historic lows earlier this year.”

And now: “Now racial tension — the deepest and rawest wound in American life — has exploded with greater velocity than at any time since 1968, a year that saw the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, as well as riots during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.”

This is important: “The tensions and frustrations are further inflamed by the fact that minority communities have been hit disproportionately hard by the coronavirus and its related economic damage.”

How this could play outhttps://bit.ly/3gL4dEf

HOW TRUMP HAS ASSERTED HIS POWER OVER REPUBLICANS:

Via The Hill’s Alexander Bolton, “President Trump is strengthening his grip on the Republican Party as they head into the heat of an election season that Democrats want to make a referendum on Trump and his handling of the coronavirus crisis.” https://bit.ly/2XScfm3

THE SENATE RETURNS TODAY

We have mentally aged since the Senate was here last:

Via The Hill’s Jordain Carney, “Monday will mark the first day senators are back in the nation’s capital since protests started last week, providing, in some cases, their first encounter with reporters, and each other, about what Congress’s and the administration’s response should be.” https://bit.ly/2MiVknx

Obama-era probes: “Senate Republicans are set to escalate two investigations into the origins of ‘Crossfire Hurricane,’ the name of the FBI investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and the Trump campaign.”

Nominations: “On the floor, McConnell has teed up five nominations, including Brian Miller to be the special inspector general for pandemic response.”
