What do you mean, 'help is on its way …?': |
President Trump said he canceled meeting with Iranian officials, telling protesters that "HELP IS ON ITS WAY." He also called on demonstrators to "take over" Iranian institutions this morning, Trump posted: "Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING - TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price. I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY. MIGA!!!" |

Has this been building for some time?: Not really. Trump has escalated his message to Iran in recent days and he has been encouraging anti-government sentiments. |
Trump ends deportation protections for Somalis: |
The Trump administration says it will end temporary protected status for thousands of Somali immigrants, targeting one of the largest immigrant communities in Minnesota. That means that Somali nationals with the protected status will need to leave the U.S. by March 17. Yes, but: It's very likely this move will get tied up in court. In other cases, judges have blocked the Trump administration from doing so. Read more |
The Clintons refuse to testify on Epstein: |
Former President Clinton refused to testify today in Republicans' congressional investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), the chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, will now launch contempt of Congress proceedings against the former president. And if former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton does not show up to testify Wednesday, Comer is threatening to hold her in contempt. Keep in mind, via The New York Times: "As the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Mr. Comer has sought to shift the focus from President Trump's ties to the convicted sex offender and his administration's decision to close its investigation into the matter without releasing key information. Instead, he has sought to shift the spotlight onto prominent Democrats who once associated with Mr. Epstein and his longtime companion Ghislaine Maxwell." (NYT) 📸 Journalists waiting for Clinton |
The annual inflation rate hit 2.7 percent in December, right on track with economists' expectations. Prices rose 0.3 percent in December, with food prices jumping 0.7 percent last month. |
The transgender sports ban is in the Supreme Court: |
The Supreme Court heard testimony in two cases today related to bans on transgender athletes competing in girls' and women's sports in Idaho and West Virginia. The Trump administration will appear to defend the bans. For context: Idaho was the first state to ban transgender girls from competing in girls' and women's sports in 2020. West Virginia followed in 2021. Now, 27 states have similar bans. Read this explainer from The Hill's Zach Schonfeld on the two cases 💬 Follow today's live blog |
The chances of a February shutdown are higher now: |
And it's because of the fatal shooting of an unarmed woman in Minneapolis by a federal immigration officer. Congressional leaders have been working to negotiate a deal to keep the government funded past the end of January, but the situation in Minneapolis is threatening to blow up the talks. Where things stand: "House lawmakers have already approved six of the 12 funding bills for fiscal 2026, and bipartisan appropriators were on track to reach a delicate agreement on the remaining bills, which were expected to move as two larger packages over the next two weeks." How the shooting of Renee Good changed that: Democrats are threatening to withhold their support for funding for the Department of Homeland Security and demanding reforms. It's not *just* the situation in Minneapolis: The situation in Venezuela and the expired ObamaCare subsidies have angered Democrats and are already threatening negotiations. Keep in mind: If the government shuts down, it would only be a partial shutdown. That's because half of the funding bills have already been passed. |
The latest with the Fed investigation: |
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro argued on Monday that the Department of Justice's probe into the Federal Reserve would not have happened "if they had just responded to our outreach." She argued on social platform X: "The United States Attorney's Office contacted the Federal Reserve on multiple occasions to discuss cost overruns and the chairman's congressional testimony, but were ignored, necessitating the use of legal process—which is not a threat." 🔎 Read her full post |
