CNN delivered former President Trump his best moment of the 2024 campaign. That's the main message from the televised town-hall earlier this week from which the shock waves are still reverberating. Trump enjoyed more than an hour of primetime in front of a supportive crowd whose loud reactions helped him swat aside any challenging questions from moderator Kaitlan Collins. |

The debt ceiling fight gripping Washington this month bears echoes of a similar clash in 2011, when a Democratic president squared off against a Republican House in a fight that dragged on for months, pushed the country to the brink of default and led to the first credit downgrade in U.S. history. Except this time might be worse. |

Homebuyers and renters alike could feel relief later this year as home prices stabilize, mortgage rates decline and rent price growth continues to slow. Economists expect the Federal Reserve to pause rate hikes for a time while it observes incoming economic data, some stemming from the banking crisis that led to tightened lending. |

Democrats are sounding increasingly fed up with free trade agreements and some of the basic tenets of globalization that have defined the last several decades of U.S. trade policy, echoing some of the "America First" sentiments that put former President Trump at odds with the economic orthodoxies of his own party and a longstanding policy consensus about the good of trade liberalization. As major trade initiatives have largely fallen to the wayside while world governments have been dealing with the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine, top officials in the Biden administration — along with top Democrats in Congress — have sounded notes of economic nationalism and domestic renewal ahead of the 2024 election. |

Former President Trump was forced to cancel his outdoor rally in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, due to tornado warnings. "Unfortunately, due to the Tornado Warnings in Des Moines, we are forced to cancel today's outdoor Rally at the Lauridsen Amphitheater," Trump said in a post on Truth Social, a few hours before the event. "Stay tuned, we will reschedule soon. Be safe out there!" |

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said the GOP needs to reject a "culture of losing" that has taken hold in the party in recent years to win the elections in 2024. DeSantis said during an appearance on Saturday at the annual Feenstra Family Picnic, an annual fundraiser hosted by Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Iowa), that Republicans will win in 2024 if they provide a "positive alternative" to President Biden and make the election a referendum on the Biden administration. |

BY CAROLINE VAKIL AND AMY LATOUR | Kentucky's contentious GOP gubernatorial primary is drawing to a finish Tuesday in a race that poses high stakes for the party looking to unseat Gov. Andy Beshear (D). State Attorney General Daniel Cameron, former U.N. ambassador Kelly Craft and Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles have regularly polled as the three main front-runners in the crowded Republican primary field jockeying to take on Beshear this fall, with Cameron widely viewed as leading the field. |

The GOP backlash to a former Navy digital ambassador who performs as a drag queen highlights a growing focus for Republican lawmakers overseeing the military. Even before Joshua Kelley was hammered for making Instagram videos under the drag queen name Harpy Daniels, Republicans held hearings on diversity programs at the Pentagon and blasted drag shows and LGBTQ events on military bases and naval ships. |

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona confirmed this week that the Department of Education is preparing to restart student loan payments later this year. "The emergency period is over, and we're preparing our borrowers to restart," Cardona said at a Senate Appropriations hearing on Thursday, as the national COVID-19 public health emergency was set to expire at midnight. |

The Biden administration this week proposed a new rule that could go a long way toward meeting the president's ambitious climate goals. But it relies on two little-used technologies, which could make its targets challenging to reach. The new proposal lays out strict limits for planet-warming emissions from coal plants and some gas plants that would significantly cut down their contributions to climate change |

OPINION | It has been a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week for the Republican Party, assuming it still cares about its image. It wasn't much better for CNN, which aired 75 prime-time minutes of Donald Trump in what is best described as political porn. The Guardian summed it up as a "leviathan of lying, a juggernaut of junk, an ocean liner of mendacity" on America's choppy political seas. |
OPINION | Back on May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation calling for a day of celebration in honor of all the mothers in the country. More than 100 years later, it's time to create a Single Mother's Day. I say so because I grew up in abject poverty and was often homeless. By the time I was 17 years old, my family and I had been evicted from 34 homes. From those homes, we would end up living out of a car, at my grandparents for a few nights or at a cheap motel until finding our way to a project or the next very temporary apartment. |

| The Biden administration and congressional Republicans are making progress in their negotiations over federal spending and raising the debt limit, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said, adding that she believes the talks could result in an agreement. |
A showdown with Congress that has the nation's creditworthiness at stake; a frenzied scene at the border as pandemic restrictions ease; a pivotal foreign trip meant to sustain support for Ukraine and contain a more assertive China in the Indo-Pacific. |

Republicans hold veto-proof supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature and could override his veto. |
