The 2024 battle for the Senate started with a bang earlier this year and has not let up, as candidates in top races continue to roll out their campaigns and incumbents scratch and claw to win reelection. Their efforts will determine who will control the upper chamber for the next two years. Democrats are trying to play defense in a number of red-leaning states to hold on to their one-seat majority, while Republicans fight recruiting battles in several states to give them the best shot at winning a majority. |

A significant share of older Americans underestimate how long their retirement is going to last: i.e., how long they are going to live. Most people know that the average American lives to an age between 75 and 80. Less well known, apparently, is that life expectancy rises with age. At age 60, an American man can expect to reach 82; a woman, 85. |

As federal and state officials prepare to renegotiate the rules governing the Colorado River, the region's tribal nations are demanding seats at the table — seats that could make or break the basin's future. The Biden administration recently announced the official launch of the process to revamp the river's long-term operational guidelines, which are set to expire at the end of 2026. |

Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie said former President Trump will show up to the GOP primary debates because of his ego. The New York Times's Maureen Dowd interviewed Christie, former governor of New Jersey, for an opinion piece published Saturday. When asked whether he believed Trump would attend the GOP debates after previously saying he may not, Christie affirmed that the former president most likely will. |

Republicans eager to impeach a Biden administration official have rallied around a new phrase to justify the rarely used move, accusing President Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of "dereliction of duty." The term, borrowed from the military, allows a court martial to punish service members who fail to obey orders or carry out their duties. |

Basketball legend Charles Barkley plans to rewrite his will in an effort to make his alma mater, Auburn University, "more diverse" in the wake of the Supreme Court striking down affirmative action last week. Barkley, who is set to headline a new primetime weekly CNN show "King Charles," with longtime broadcaster Gayle King this fall, told media outlet AL.com that he wanted to do something to help black students at his alma mater after hearing the news. |

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (D) on Sunday knocked Gov. Ron DeSantis's (R-Fla.) campaign after it shared a controversial video that attacked former President Trump, the Florida governor's fellow 2024 contender, for his previous comments on LGBTQ rights. "I'm going to choose my words carefully, partly because I'm appearing as secretary, so I can't talk about campaigns. And I'm going to leave aside the strangeness of trying to prove your manhood by putting up a video that splices images of you in between oiled-up shirtless bodybuilders, and just get to a bigger issue that is on my mind whenever I see this stuff in the policy space, which is, again, who are you trying to help?" Buttigieg said on CNN's "State of the Union." |

OPINION | Will the care be there? A confluence of unprecedented challenges over the last three years, including workforce shortages, skyrocketing costs of providing care and supply chain disruptions, poses a serious risk to America's hospitals' and health systems' ability to do what communities across the country rely on them for — providing quality and accessible care 24/7 to all who need it. These headwinds also include an aging population in need of medical care and the necessity to invest in newer facilities and technological upgrades, such as those to fight against growing cybersecurity threats and to ensure patients have access to the latest cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs. |
OPINION | During hearings after the recent failures of Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank and First Republic Bank — including the last one by the Committee on Oversight Accountability's Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services — several members on both sides of the aisle have asked how can we "end," "prevent" or "stop" bank failures. Not banking crises or bailouts, but failures. Perhaps that just reflects people misspeaking in the heat of the moment. If so, that's understandable. But if those words were spoken as intended, whatever initiatives follow won't likely end bank failures. |
